ROCK OF ASIAN: Ninjasonik

November 4th, 2009 | 1 comment | Posted by Diana

Ninjasonik recently released the party track, “Tight Pants, which hails hip hop kids in tight pants as champions daring to be different. They send a lyrical shout-out to Uniqlo, our favorite Japanese low-cost outfitter and a prominent supplier of the “tight pants movement.”

But the props don’t stop there–Ninjasonik then teamed up with a bunch of Brooklyn cool kids (like my long-lost pal Jake Septimus) to produce a music video almost entirely composed of clips from Uniqlock, Uniqlo’s awesomely weird widget/microsite, which features emotionless scenes of models dancing in formation.

And WAITAMINUTE: Are those little fuzzy characters an homage to Miyazaki’s soot sprites? If so, we love this spot even MORE.

Check out more Ninjasonik, including the remix of Matt n Kim’s “Daylight,” (via ONTD), on MySpace.

BABEWATCH: Male Model Daniel Liu

August 25th, 2009 | 2 comments | Posted by Jen

Meet Daniel Liu. He recently signed with Ford Models and can be seen in the upcoming Uniqlo Fall/Winter campaign. He’s of Taiwanese descent and is 6’3″(!) of man. He’s also our blogger pal Joz’s (8 Asians) cousin.

Incidentally, we’re having lunch with Joz this week, where we will 1) try not to drool on our food as we grill her about the hotness she’s related to, and 2) do our damnedest to get invited to their next Family Gathering.

DISGRASIANtern Dispatch: Fashionasian

May 31st, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

May 30, 2008 should be remembered, not only as the release date of the longest “Sex and The City” episode yet, but as the day the dreamy collaborasian between designer Alexander Wang and Japanese retailer Uniqlo became fashion reality.

The proposition came from Uniqlo, as much a surprise as a delight.

“I replied like, ‘Yeaaaaah’ and ran screaming to my brother and sister who I work with, just so excited.”

Fans and followers flocked to Uniqlo’s SoHo flagship to line up as early as 8 AM for an 11 AM opening. Meanwhile, Wang marveled as friends and family snatched up the adorable, reasonably priced dresses.

“It’s amazing, that’s just like wow, we didn’t announce it!” he said. “I mean, there were blogs and online things, but that people actually followed it means so much to me that people love the clothes so much they came here early.”

So modest, and so talented, that Alexander. So when will Uniqlo answer my fashion prayers and open a store in Chicago? Or start selling their lovely wares on-line?
