ROCK OF ASIAN: Gabe Bondoc

September 23rd, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Say what you will about singer/songwriters –they’ve got to be dreamy. If it’s not in their face, it’s gotta be in the words, the vocal chords, their very essence.

It’s kind of shameful to admit but, for many ladies, the allure of a singer/songwriter is the musical promise that someone out there can and will speak to our very soul, peer into our heart and love us like we’ve seen in films and read about in weepy novels. Someone can hold us gently with just the lyrics on their lips, and they won’t muck it up with a gassy burp, prolonged glance at a Tecate girl, or grouchy man moment.

But let’s face it. Some singer/songwriter douchbags neg on the promise, and you realize that when they were talking about your body being a wonderland, they weren’t really talking about you; they meant every groupie and her mom, plus every tabloid-friendly celebrity they could get their grubby little hands on. Ew.

Gabe Bondoc doesn’t seem like an empty promise guy, though. He actually appears to be a real sweetheart, and whispers those soft secrets with a most ticklish, velvety voice, all the while working those animated cheek dimples and angel-perfect mug. Beloved on YouTube for both silly cover songs (like “Part of Your World” from Disney’s The Little Mermaid or N*Sync’s “It’s Gonna Be Me”) and original compositions, Gabe is a lighthearted dreamboat.

And a gentleman:

…so much so that we wish we were in a movie right now, so we could melt in his dreamy arms.

ROCK OF ASIAN: The Little Ones

February 18th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

It’s hard not to fall hard for The Little Ones, a band of boys that share our hometown and seem sweet as ice cream. We hear soft musings à la Deathcab (like, in its 2.o state, not Stability EP-style) with an almost Mamas and Papas-esque, folksy group vibe, all made more interesting by the occasional dabble in new wavey, maybe Psychadelic Furs-y, texture.

That is not to strip anything away from the identity The Little Ones themselves, who have a singular appeal and a welcome, warm, fresh sensibility. They’re like a glass of lemonade on a icky-hot day, a soft kiss on the lips at the end of a slow dance, a long walk in the middle of a 9-5 afternoon. Simply put, they make us happy. And in times like these, that ain’t no little feat.

ROCK OF ASIAN: Kid Koala

September 17th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Few tickle vinyl with such brilliant fervor as our favorite Canadiasian deejay Kid Koala, whose turntable-told stories fascinate us, and soft-spoken illustrative aesthetic somehow warms our icy cold hearts. Kids are cute, koalas even cuter– we hate to say this about the man, but he is CUTE with all capital letters. CUTE CUTE CUTE.

Check out Koala’s latest project, Your Mom’s Favorite DJ, out on Ninja Tune Records now.

ROCK OF ASIAN: Justin Nozuka

May 21st, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Try as I might to convince you to do otherwise, some of y’all are simply not going to burn your Jack Johnson, John Mayer (sure he’s got finger-lickin axe skills, but is why does he insist on using them on an inane blog and brainless celebrity girlfriends?), Josh Groban, James Blunt, assorted other J-name singer-songwriter-guitarist grandma-masturbation-material albums. Fine. That’s fine.

So I’m going to hop in the train for a moment here and introduce you to the one cute cute cutey J-name that we do actually happen to like: Justin Nozuka.

Go ahead… watch… listen…

…you love him, right? So does your grandma.

ROCK OF ASIAN: My Compatriots

April 2nd, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

I’ve been a fan of Jon Caro (center, holding the impossibly cute french bulldog) for a number of years, ever since he emerged on the bumbling SoCal indie scene at the dawn of the oughts with a uniquely earnest pop effort, Stairwell.

You’ve gotta love a guy that devotes his pen and pipes to tunes on the sweeter side, opting for delicate odes rather than angry anthems. It’s kinda like being Malkmus instead of Mould, or Harvey instead of Gordon–not as easy as it looks.

Or maybe it is, for some people.

Listen to Jon and his compatriots here.

ROCK OF HONORASIAN: Cavil At Rest

February 27th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Cavil at Rest singer/guitarist Ryan Hanh–that adorable, curly-mopped chap driving the white car you see above–was a military brat born in the UK, raised in Singapore, and dumped into the ‘burbs of Southern California. Because of his last name, I’d been convinced for time that his kinky ‘fro actually belied his blood heritage–and he was actually through-and-through Vietnamese, like me. I finally asked (he’s not). But, he maintains, he feels Asian. And I realized then that sometimes, that’s all that matters.

Cavil at Rest is your new favorite band. Look at all those dudes–from the top left, Matt, Taylor, Andy, Kelcey, and Ryan–so gosh-darn sweet-faced, so compact, so fashionably v-necked. Through their charged urban-hippie soul rock I pull references from MC5 to The Doobie Brothers to The Rolling Stones to The Potatomen to the southwestern guitarist that played at my friend Dan’s New Mexico wedding. That’s not a bad palette for a band from my coastal South Orange County homeland (which, as Jen will attest to, is a expensively ugly breeding ground for average tastes and mediocre spirits).

Lend an ear here. Enjoy.
