Y’all know how much we like to joke about how hardass our people are, and how we were disciplined as children. Yeah, we were spanked with hairbrushes, flyswatters, and belts, and sometimes we got slapped in the face (Diana’s sister did for receiving a love note from a classmate…in the 2nd grade). Our moms read our diaries and punished us for our private thoughts. We were told we were failures for bringing home B’s and low test scores, and our parents rarely approved of our friends, who they tended to think were dumb, ill-mannered, disrespectful, and bad influences. Minor infractions like wearing a too-short skirt or missing curfew were judged as major flaws in our character. And the threat of disownment hung over us constantly, like a thick, sullen storm cloud.

The older we get, however, the more we get it. Our Hardass Asian Parents grew up in worlds devastated by war, poverty, deprivation, displacement, and loss. They wanted us to succeed because they didn’t ever want us to “go back to where we came from.” There was a method to their hardass-ness, even though that method was sometimes wack and didn’t easily jibe with our growing up in America. It wasn’t, to paraphrase Phil Collins, a groovy kinda parental love. But it was a kind of love.

When we read this week about a teacher in China who ripped her 5th grade student’s cheek off for not doing his homework, our Hardass Asian Alarm Bells went off. After 10 year-old Chao Qun Zheng told his teacher, Ms. Guo, that he hadn’t completed his homework, she grabbed him by the face, lifted him off the ground, and didn’t let go until she tore his cheek off. It was reported that Ms. Guo then “picked up Zheng’s cheek skin, put it on his face, and instructed the boy go home immediately.”

It took 52 stitches to put the boy’s cheek back on.

While it would be easy to chalk this up to Hardass Asian Whathaveyou (one commenter on the story wrote, “I’ve been abused worse than that by my own mother. Asians are hardcore when it comes to schoolwork. This boy just had weak cheeks”), and DISGRASIAN’s not exactly about cutting people slack–especially when it comes to not doing your homework–we also know that there’s a real difference between being a hardass and being a violent, twisted, abusive sick fuck.

And this isn’t hardass, funny, or some sort of intergenerational conflict-anecdote to grow on. This is just wrong.

Thanks, Irwin and Cathy!

Back in May, when Mahender and Varsha Sabhnani, Long Island millionaires (by way of India and Indonesia, respectively) in the perfume biz, were arrested for enslaving their two Indonesian housekeepers, Diana suggested that the ghoulish-looking Varsha and Gwen Stefani go bowling together. But at least Gwen lets her Harajuku Slaves out of the house once and a while and dolls them up in expensive, albeit matching, outfits.

The Sabhnanis were convicted this week on 12 counts that included forced labor, involuntary servitude, and harboring illegal aliens, and their crimes against their slaves, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, were far more grave:

Prosecutors likened the conditions of the two maids to a “house of horrors”. They presented evidence that over five years of virtual slavery the women were paid $US100 ($116) a month, made to take cold showers and insufficiently fed. When she was caught trying to steal extra food, Samirah said, she was punished by being made to eat chilli and then, when she became nauseous, forced to eat her own vomit.

We’re not talkin’ Hormel chili either, we’re talking hot chili peppers.

We wish Enung and Samirah, the enslaved housekeepers who had come to the U.S. to support their families back in Indonesia, all the best in their newfound freedom, including tons of therapy, meds, and cash money for their trauma.

As for Varsha, I don’t think I’ll be able to get her scary visage out of my brain for a while. Especially given that she bears a passing resemblance to another famous bogeyman…

…doesn’t she?

Thanks Stella!

First Impressions Are Misleading

November 20th, 2007 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

There are a few videos going around on the internets that are so foul, YouTubers are posting their own reactions to them and getting a lot of notice. One of the original videos is 2 Girls 1 Cup, which is a porno involving shit-eating (and you know how I feel about that), and the other one is called BME Pain Olympics (I can’t in good conscience link to them, but if you’re a sick freak, google them). The latter is what this guy is watching:

The first time I saw this reaction vid, I thought, wow this guy is a big pussy. Is he fer serious with the “O” face?

Then I found a BME Pain Olympics link. BME Pain Olympics is about a minute and a half long and shows closeup footage of several guys chopping off their balls and dicks with knives and hatchets. I got about 30 seconds into it before I passed out.

Now I want to nominate the guy in the reaction video for Amazian of the Week.

JK! LOL! ;)

This just in from Australian news outfit, The Age: “Hoax text message spreads tsunami terror”

Thousands of people fled their homes in panic on the Indonesian coast after hoax SMS messages warned them a tsunami will hit the region.

“The possibility is that a tsunami may take place on June 7,” said part of a short telephone text message (SMS) that is widely circulating in various coastal areas of Nusa Tenggara province, local journalists said.

This Chick is Crazy

May 9th, 2007 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Surfing Digg the other day, I came upon an incredibly disturbing article on Weird Asia News. The pictures above are screen grabs from a video that recently circulated the Chinese webosphere– of a psychotically happy, maniacal girl ripping a live baby duckling apart with her feet. This is her just after the act. The photos were so gruesome that I almost cried.

But then I thought: Fuck tears. I’m angry. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE? This bitch is crazy, but worse– she apparently made the video in response to another set of popular images that appeared on the website Crushworld, which depict a woman’s spiked stiletto crushing a small kitten.

I know I don’t have to say it, but everyone involved is totally sick and should be socked in the face! And if this bitch isn’t a DISGRASIAN, I don’t know who is.

You can access the article here, but please be aware that the photos are extremely graphic.

Freeman No More

May 2nd, 2007 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

After two years on the lam, Kenneth Freeman, a former deputy sheriff accused of raping his own daughter and posting videos–plural–of the assaults on the internet, has been captured in Hong Kong by U.S. Marshals and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement). According to the Department of Justice website, “Internet scenes allegedly showing the girl being raped by her father became one of the most widely downloaded child pornography videos in recent years.”

What a sick fuck.

It is believed that Freeman was living in Suzhou, China, from where he could not be extradited, because no extradition agreement exists between the U.S. and China. We do have such a treaty with Hong Kong, however, signed in 1996 while Hong Kong was still under British rule and enforced ever since.

God, what do you say about something like this? Score one for colonialism?
