Holidaysians, Celebrasians, Donasians… And Giving The Gift Of Hyphen

December 21st, 2009 | 2 comments | Posted by Diana

Ladies and Gents, it’s been quite a year: Dubya left the building, Laura and Euna came back to us safely, Miley got goofy, Nadya Suleman lips got tabloid time, Kanye lost his hand, the Gosselins aired every last Garanimal of their dirty laundry, and Tiger Woods fell off his hookerbitch-lovin’ pedestal.

DISGRASIAN also got a makeover.

Frankly, we’re pooped. So we’re taking the rest of the year off for a little shaming break.

Time to go deal with important stuff!

Time to go deal with important stuff!

But before we go, we thought we’d mention our plans for celebrasian–which include a bit of donasian to Hyphen Magazine!

Alright, maybe we’re a little biased because they’ve spent some of their non-profit funds photographing us this year.  But we also believe in Hyphen–what they do and how they do it is an inspirasian to us all.

BABEWATCH: Obama Girl In Red Coat

December 1st, 2009 | 6 comments | Posted by Diana

Apparently, the only thing that can distract a listener from the greatest orator of our time… is a lady in red.

During President Obama’s town hall discussion with Chinese Youth on November 16, a student named Wang Zifei simply sat down and took a cute red coat off…while, uh, smiling with her eyes.

This might feel like a bit of a dirty peepshow, but check out the sensuous-smooth style of her unwrapping (photos nabbed from the Daily Mail’s screen grab collection):

DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! The Obama Bow-cklash

Obama Bow Japan

To the angry, inflammatory, right-wing pundits (like Michelle Malkin and Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh), and all of the folks that are losing sleep over the fact that President Obama (gasp!) bowed while shaking the hand of Japanese Emperor Akihito…

Kirk Walters Bow Cartoon

…there’s a fascinating new concept we’d like to introduce to you called “SHOWING RESPECT.”

He Said WHAT?! Obama Has Never Used Twitter

November 16th, 2009 | 6 comments | Posted by Jen

The internetz is spazzing out today over a bomb Obama dropped Sunday at a town hall meeting of university students in Shanghai, the third stop on his Asia tour. When asked if the Chinese should be able to “use Twitter freely”–Twitter and Facebook are both blocked in China–our president, who has 2.6 million followers on the social networking platform, said:

Well, first of all, let me say that I have never used Twitter. I noticed that young people — they’re very busy with all these electronics. My thumbs are too clumsy to type in things on the phone.

Obama also addressed those little matters of censorship and human rights, calling freedom of expression and religion “universal rights” before the Chinese government-selected crowd, but never mind that.

The takeaway here, OBVS, is that Obama has never used Twitter. Because all the blogs are talking about it, it’s become, like, this big internet meme overnight, and it’s one of the hottest trending topics on Twitter at the moment, right up there with  “bad romance,” the Lady Gaga single, and “Stephen Jackson,” a recently-traded basketball player.

You know, like the stuff that really matters?

President Obama’s Half-Brother May Be An Opportunist… But He’s Also, Like, Chinese!

November 4th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Does it make us squirm a little to learn that President Obama’s half-brother has conveniently adopted his father’s last name, just in time to promote his semi-autobiographical book about the dad he shares with our President? Yes.

But does the thought of another adorable, amazian munchkin visiting Uncle Barack in the White House someday make us squeal, a lot? YUP.

President Obama, Don’t Tell Us If You Don’t Mean It

October 12th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Mr. President, we’re watching and waiting (patiently, as you’ve asked) for you to make good on this promise. And so is our hero, Dan Choi. Here he is on The Situation Room today:

We hope that the next time he goes into the studio to talk to Wolf, he’s celebrating the eradication of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Your Baby, Too, Can Look Like Obama’s Kin! [AMAZIAN JR. BABY PHOTO CONTEST]

October 2nd, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

We couldn’t help but squeal this week when, while cyberstalking casually browsing through AP photos of the Obama and Ng families during vacation time in D.C., we discovered another picture show of little Savita!

How brainy families go on holiday

Imagine our delight when we realized that our Baby of the week spent the holiday rocking one of our favorite tiny clothes designers: Kumquat! (Perhaps you’ve noticed Giant Robot’s love for the baby brand, as well.)

You kinda have to look closely to see past the harness, but she’s definitely wearing the Organic Squirrel Tree collection (also pictured above, right):

Konrad Ng, Savita (in harness), President Obama, squirrels and stripes

So we got to thinking. Shouldn’t every baby deserve to look as cute as the President’s niece? Shouldn’t all children have an equal opportunity to adorn their munchkin legs with hip prints and soft, organic cotton? We sure think so.

That, friends, is why we’ve partnered up with Kumquat to bring you this week’s AMAZIAN JR. BABY PHOTO CONTEST!!! (We’re looking for cute photos of Asian and Asian-mix babies. We know that babies of all ethnicities are cute, but we happen to have an especial desire to collect photos of those munchkins with at least a drop of yellow in ‘em. Please understand!)

Here’s the lowdown.

  • Entrants must only submit photos of babies they know personally.
  • Entrants must only submit photos they own and have permission to share (Please don’t even bother trolling the web for photos of random cute Asian babies; we’ve already done it and will definitely recognize ‘em!).
  • Photos must be of tykes between the ages of 0 and 3.
  • Photos must be cute.
  • Please limit your submissions to 2 photos per baby, maximum 10 babies.
  • Submission cutoff is 11:59pm PST on Friday, October 9.
  • The winning photo will be selected by DISGRASIAN and Kumquat, and posted on Monday, October 12.
  • Contest winner will receive a $50 Gift Certificate for Kumquat! WOW!
  • Note that all babies, not just cute Asian babies, look cuter in Kumquat.

PLEASE SUBMIT ENTRY PHOTOS TO info@disgrasian.com.

GOOD LUCK!

BABYWATCH: Barack Obama And Niece Savita Ng In The World’s Most Adorable Hangout Sesh

September 29th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Not gonna lie–my womb does a little dance every time I lay eyes on a cuter-than-a-panda toddler, especially one with almond eyes, jet-black hair, chubby little hands and feet. This occurs especially when I gaze at a munchkin with a sweet name like “Savita Lola Yan-Song Ng,” whose giggly, tiny face is the product of genetics from two crushworthy, Babe-a-licious parents (we’ve had our eye on hot Mom and Dad for a long while, to be sure). And even more especially when that little ‘un is being tossed in their air by our cool-ass President:

The Prez and niece Savita. Warning: This photo may cause a diabetic coma.

Look at that little cardigan! The squealy laughter! Those pink cheeks!

Unfazed? Try to resist this (you can’t):

Tee hee!

Oh, if only this precious scene could last forever. My uterus is literally doing the freaking Roger Rabbit.

DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! Joe Wilson

September 11th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Joe Wilson has already apologized to President Obama for breaking decorum and shouting “You Lie!” at Obama during his Wednesday night speech to Congress on the subject of Healthcare Reform.

From HuffPo:

“Not long after the speech ended, Wilson issued an apology. ‘This evening I let my emotions get the best of me when listening to the President’s remarks regarding the coverage of illegal immigrants in the health care bill,’ he said. While I disagree with the President’s statement, my comments were inappropriate and regrettable. I extend sincere apologies to the President for this lack of civility.’ Wilson also called the White House to apologize.”

He may have said the words, but it sure is hard to believe that Wilson is actually, truly, really, really sorry for the inappropriate outburst, an action that has been condemned from both sides of the aisle as shameful, disrespectful and embarassing.

So what was the tipping point leading to Wilson’s swift “sorry?” Did he refer immediately to his Blackberry and realize that #JoeWilsonIsADouche had instantly become a trending topic on Twitter? Did his wife text him: “WTF, U IDIOT!?” Did he realize that he was single-handedly about to crash his own government site with an ugly media frenzy?

Something tells us it was actually much simpler, a gut reaction to the most powerful and classic of sorrymaking machines: the cold, hard faces of two Hardass Asian Parents (as played, in this instance, by Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi).

Peep Mom and Dad the moment they hear Wilson’s outburst from the floor. Pelosi’s jaw hits the floor and her eyes become nuclear daggers. Biden drops his head and shakes it with disgust and shame, the kind of shake a dad can only achieve when he wishes you didn’t exist. EVER.

I’ve seen my parents do this A THOUSAND TIMES. It never fails.

The one thing I’ve learned–A Hardass Asian Parent can’t kill you with their eyes, but they’ll sure as hell try. And instead, they’ll just make you really fucking sorry.

Barack Obama Tells Students Failure Is ‘Okay,’ Gives Several Hardass Asian Parents a Collective Heart Attack

September 8th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Dear President Obama,

Where in the world were you when I was growing up? Why weren’t you speaking to me in school, telling me that lots of successful people experience failure, instead of saying, “If you are not the very best, then you are a total failure; if you are a failure, you are dead to us,” like my parents? Couldn’t you have taken them aside at some point and been like, “Hey, your daughter seems pretty smart and very enthusiastic about taking her life in a unique direction that will no doubt be successful. But sometimes, she’ll slip a little on the way. Try not to go too hard on her for that A minus or decision to be an English major. Eventually she’ll have the ability to write about you in a blog that’s accessible from all over the world, and don’t you want those words to be nice? Just a little advice.”

“BEING SUCCESSFUL IS HARD?” Why didn’t I hear this years ago? This sentence alone could have saved me about 3,496 tears and hours of therapy. For crying out loud, don’t you think I could’ve used this little pep talk a couple of decades ago, sir? Hell, I could have used this pep talk LAST WEEK. Sigh.

Lastly, what’s up with the “that’s okay” phrase you used with the kids today? What does that mean? Who says that? I heard “that’s okay” when I brought home a 4.0 GPA instead of an 4.3 and asked, “Isn’t that good?” And when I offered my parents tickets to see me perform in my junior high musical (“Eh, that’s okay”). But acknowledging that a kid might fuck up a couple times in their life and saying it’s “okay?” That I just don’t understand.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Talk to you soon!

xoxo

DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! Myanmar’s Military Junta

August 14th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

A court in Burma sentenced pro-democracy opposition leader and Nobel Peace Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional 18 months of house arrest (dialed down from a sentence of 3 years hard labor) earlier this week, for violating the terms of her original house arrest agreement. The violation occured when 53-year-old American John Yettaw swam uninvited across a lake to her villa, in attempt to “save” her from assassination–he has since been slapped with seven years of prison and hard labor for “breaching the rules of her house arrest and for violations of immigration law and local ordinances.”

Sadly, despite her lack of volition in the incident, Suu Kyi is still paying the price for Yettaw’s white knight moment.

We think the statement from President Obama says it best:

“The conviction and sentencing of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi today on charges related to an uninvited intrusion into her home violate universal principles of human rights, run counter to Burma’s commitments under the ASEAN charter, and demonstrate continued disregard for UN Security Council statements. I join the international community in calling for Aung San Suu Kyi’s immediate unconditional release.

Today’s unjust decision reminds us of the thousands of other political prisoners in Burma who, like Aung San Suu Kyi, have been denied their liberty because of their pursuit of a government that respects the will, rights, and aspirations of all Burmese citizens…”

But we are perhaps most encouraged by one particular voice of condemnation, which spoke loudly against the conviction from a tour through Africa:

“[Suu Kyi] should not have been tried and she should not have been convicted.”

…and we encourage the junta to take Sec. Clinton’s firm words to heart. Our advice to those assholes—don’t keep this bitch mad for long. Rest assured that she can and will fuck your shit up. And we certainly hope she does.
