Another Lost In Translasian? Ugh.

First-time feature director Zoe Cassavetes, daughter of late, legendary indie filmmaker John (A Woman Under the Influence, Gloria) and sister of not-so-legendary Nick (The Notebook), premiered her movie, Broken English, two nights ago in New York. When I first heard of it, and saw that Ugly Horseface Sofia Coppola–Zoe’s BFF–had attended the premiere, I thought, Here we go. Again.

Take a look at these two stills, the first from Broken English, and the second from Lost In Translation.

A Lonely Waif In a Strange Land

The good news is that most of the cross-cultural confusion happens in Paris in Cassavetes’ film. It remains to be seen whether it will be any good or whether the French will come off as batshit-keyrazy as the Japanese did in Lost in Translation. Hope so–sounds fun!

But what’s with these girls and their linguistic difficulties?

“No one, like, understands us.”
