Quel scandale! It has been revealed post-inauguration that the ceremony quartet comprised of Yo-Yo Ma, Iztzhak Perlman, Anthony McGill, and Gabriela Montero was FINGER-SYNCING!
The NY Times reported Thursday that the players and inauguration organizing committee said the finger-syncing (to a recording made by the quartet two days prior to the ceremony) was “necessary” because of the freezing temperatures and wind, which could have resulted in broken piano strings and cracked instruments. They also maintained that it was an arrangement no one tried to hide. Yo-Yo Ma was quoted as saying:
“I really wanted to do something that was absolutely physically and emotionally and, timing-wise, genuine. We also knew we couldn’t have any technical or instrumental malfunction on that occasion. A broken string was not an option. It was wicked cold.”
So, Yo-Yo Ma may be a genius and a former child prodigy, but he isn’t superhuman enough to play like that in extreme weather, and he actually ponders his own fallibility?
I feel slightly better about myself knowing that.
