ROCK OF ASIAN: Jane Lui

We basically love everything about the Hong Kong-born, California-raised Jane Lui. There’s that sweet, naturally pretty face of hers, coupled with her skinny frame and goofy-adorable aesthetic. And there’s her very familiar immigrant story and too-cute happy energy. But above all things, we love the strong, smoky, sensual voice that emanates from somewhere within the tiny person: a power tool that comes unexpectedly from its host.
Since discovering Lui’s greatness, we’ ve combed through her official site, stalked her on MySpace and Facebook, followed her on Twitter, and subscribed to her YouTube channel–uh, call us superfans (or creeps). What we really can’t seem to get enough of, though, is this collaboration with YouTube star SingingDork888, a cover of The Turtles’ classic “Happy Together” that gives us all kind of sweetheart tingles:
It makes us sigh, like black-and-white pictures of our parents when they were skinny, young, and smiling.
SoCal residents, catch some live Jane Lui action with DISGRASIAN favorites Kina Grannis and David Choi this month (May 14th at 6pm) at the UC Riverside campus Bell Tower. We’re gonna try and be cool in the back, but it’ll be hard.

Hallelujasian
Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” is a perfect song. What’s the definition of a perfect song? One that, no matter how it’s interpreted, can’t be fucked up. And, by extension of that logic, it’s a song that can’t really be interpreted that much in the first place, ipso facto of its perfection (other songs that qualify: almost anything in the McCartney/Lennon songbook, The Kinks’ “Waterloo Sunset,” Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide,” “My Funny Valentine,” the Willie Nelson-penned-Patsy Cline-performed “Crazy,” Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart”). Kina Grannis posted her own version of “Hallelujah” on YouTube a few days ago and does a nice job covering it, although, like I said, it’s nearly impossible to murder:
If you’re in the L.A.-area, catch Kina this Saturday for free or July 25 at The Hotel Cafe.

Rock of Congratulasians
We like to think that it was solely the combined influence of DISGRASIAN and Angry Asian Man readerships that stole the top honor in the Crash the Superbowl contest for Kina Grannis.
But even if we weren’t the only ones that helped tip the scales, we sure were proud as parents when we saw her music video during the first half of last Sunday’s big game.
If you happened to miss it because you were too busy stuffing carbs down your gullet, watch the vid now:
Let us all tip our hats to the Kina! Congratulasians on her new record deal!

ROCK OF ASIAN: Kina Grannis
Our friends in Cavil at Rest introduced us to the soft and sweet strums of the adorable Texasian Kina Grannis. Angry Asian Man loves her, and so do we. What’s not to love–beautiful face, cultural variety, a soft twang in her gentle voice?
Grannis is currently a Top 3 Finalist in a contest called Crash the Superbowl, which results in a cool indie artist’s video being run during the big game. Let’s show her some love and win it for her, shall we? The thought of any of those other nerds taking the prize kinda gives me food-poisoning-style-nausea.
Vote here.
