Gaysian = Fun

Gay marriage is legal in Vermont!

Vermont joins Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Iowa–which legalized gay marriage last week–in recognizing same-sex unions. New Hampshire and Maine are apparently considering similar moves, and Washington D.C.’s City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to recognize same-sex marriages performed outside the district. Even though equal marriage rights in our state of California are in bad shape right now, this is progress, people.

Of course, not everyone thinks so.

Over the weekend, we received an email from a reader–I should probably say “ex”-reader–who expressed his displeasure over our support of gay marriage.

Now, I could go into how gay marriage rights are civil rights, and banning gay marriage is discrimination, and how civil rights and discrimination affect us all, but most especially minorities and people of color, and, therefore, gay marriage has everything to do with Asian-American “perspectives,” but y’all, I’m just really hung up on one detail.

This poor soul clearly doesn’t know any Gaysians. Like Sulu. Or our hero Margaret Cho. Or the only funny character on Entourage (played by the openly gay Rex Lee). Or the always quietly divine B.D. Wong. Or Esera Tuaolo, who’s only the third former NFL player to come out and is working to defeat homophobia in professional sports. Or any of our countless friends who, orientasian aside, want what everyone else wants in life–to love and be loved.

And a life without Gaysians?

It’s so small. So sad. So pitiable.

Iowa Rules

April 3rd, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

How about a bit of good news?

From AP:

The Iowa Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling Friday finding that the state’s same-sex marriage ban violates the constitutional rights of gay and lesbian couples, making Iowa the third state where marriage is legal.”*

*Therefore proving that, although Middle America may not necessarily lead the country in the news, banking, entertainment, or fashion industries, it sure can be at the forefront of the industry of yanking one’s head out of one’s own ass. Seems like there are about 47 other states (um, hi, California) that could and should take a cue from that.

Bobby Jindal: Just Another Politasian

November 25th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal was in Iowa over the weekend, special guest at the “Celebrating the Family” fundraiser held by the Iowa Family Policy Center. In a speech to 800 attendees, Jindal called for a reconciliasian between conservative voters and their new president:

“Whether you voted for him or not,” Jindal said of the new president, “whether you supported the new leaders of Congress or not, they’re our president. They’re our Congress. They need our prayers. They need our support.”

Smooth move, Bobby Jindal.

Not so smooth was his choice to speak at a banquet held by the anti-gay, anti-choice Iowa Family Policy Center. Same-sex marriage rights will be decided in the Iowa Supreme Court next month, and the Iowa Family Policy Center is leading the hateration against it, calling proponents of gay marriage “anti-family.”

You know what’s really “anti-family”? Half of the poor, elderly, and disabled from New Orleans who are permanently displaced from their homes since Katrina. And the lack of affordable housing or even a plan for affordable housing for these families. Not to mention the thousands of people still living in FEMA trailers.

Get your own house and your own damn family (i.e. Louisiana) in order before you start stumping in Iowa, Bobby Jindal! Sheesh. We thought you were smarter than that.
