DISGRASIAN’s Summer Reading: The Infinite Garage

August 6th, 2010 | 2 comments | Posted by Jen

We’ll be away from our desks the month of August, carrying on with the non-bloggy aspects of our lives, watching mindless movie blockbusters, and indulging in summery drinks made with generous pours of bourbon. During this month, we’ll be linking each day to a different website that we ♥. Hopefully you’ll discover something delightful and new while we’re gone. If not, you are a serious Captain Crankypants and are probably in dire need of a summery drink made with a generous pour of bourbon.

‘Til September, lovelies.

Lee and her parents in Yosemite

Writer Raina Lee (Hit Me With Your Best Shot: The Ultimate Guide To Karaoke Domination) inherited a 3-car garage. The garage was filled with 35 years-worth of her parents’ things. Sorting through all of it begat The Infinite Garage, an art project, blog, personal history, and inventory of the immigrant experience (Lee’s parents immigrated from Taiwan). Here are Lee’s own thoughts on the documenting of the garage’s contents:

The Infinite Garage is my blog that examines life through objects however mundane, useless or beautiful. It’s a history of my family through things. But mainly it’s a personal purging project because I can’t move out of this house and on with my life until I get rid of the stuff.

Also: Infinite Garage is effing amazing. I’ve never seen a personal history told this way, through yellowed photographs, vintage clothing, birthday cards, rolls of change, little things saved and accumulated often for no discernible reason.

And if you’d like to own a piece of that history, Lee is selling some items from the garage online at Etsy. At the moment, the shop’s stocked with awesome 80′s-ish clothing and accessories. I’m particularly in love with this Indian cotton madras dress.
