Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior: Because Their Daughters Get Into Harvard, That’s Why

April 1st, 2011 | 2 comments | Posted by Jen

For those of you eagerly awaiting a very public failure from one of Tiger Mom Amy Chua’s prodigy offspring–like a crack cocaine bender or half-naked photos leaked onto the Internet–so that you can feel better about your own parenting-style/feel better about the lax way in which you were parented/feel better about the strict way in which you were parented that weirdly didn’t yield the same sort of results/feel better about the fact that “the Chinese way” isn’t better therefore you don’t have to confront your diminishing place in the global power structure/oh hell, just feel better about yourself in general…

Um, better luck next year?

Because this year, Chua’s Number One Daughter, Sophia (pictured), has been accepted to Harvard–Chua’s alma mater and where she and her invisible husband, Jed Rubenfeld, received their law degrees–despite the fact that the university took only 6.2 percent of its undergraduate applicants for the Class of 2015, which was the lowest admissions rate of all the Ivies. And according to Above the Law, Sophia has already decided to matriculate there as well.

But hey, there’s still time for Lulu–Chua’s Number Two Daughter who teaches her Tiger Continue reading Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior: Because Their Daughters Get Into Harvard, That’s Why

The Amazing Race’s Victor Jih: Outed

February 25th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

One of my gay BFFs emailed me last night and wrote about The Amazing Race‘s brother-sister, Harvard lawyer team Victor and Tammy Jih:

I love the asian brother (gaysian?) and sister on the amazing race. Like totally hot asians! As ja-mae [from the delightful Summer Heights High--ed.] would say.”

I had wondered the same thing myself, and there have been a few online discussions about Victor’s orientasian. So I did some digging, and discovered…

Victor’s a big ol’ flaming…REPUBLICAN. He gave $2,300 (the max) to Mitt Romney during the primaries. I guess this doesn’t come as a total surprise since he is a partner at a massive corporate law firm in L.A., the kind that would get our Hardass Asian Parents wet, but it’s way less exciting than I had imagined.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss.

Lost in Transition

November 5th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

Chris Lu, Obama’s Harvard Law classmate and Senate legislative director, has been named executive director of our President-elect’s (feels great to write that) transition team. For those of you who don’t know what a transition team does (as I didn’t), the Chicago Sun-Times describes their duties as such:

…how to turn campaign promises into action; arranging security clearances for those involved in the handover; figuring decision time lines; strategizing on how the executive office should be organized, and filling the top 100 positions.

Cool. Now if only Chris could help me transition out of my post-election “Who Am I Now That This Is All Over?” hangover.

Here’s Chris earlier this year during the Delaware primary, offering a “no comment” on white men:

Thanks, Irwin!
