ROCK OF ASIAN: Lydiajojo
Why we approve of YouTube darling Lydia Jo:
- Though she’s got about a jillion videos of her singing on the Internets, she’s smart enough to set her social networking profiles to private and keep her junk to herself (Good girl!).
- When covering Mariah Carey songs, she knows to stick to the awesome 90’s stuff, not the creepy, Charmbracelet-era crapola:
- With her cute hair flip, baby cheeks, and funky earrings, she kinda vibes like a modern Claudia Kishi.
- She plays piano real nice.
- She loves family. Try to resist this performance with sis and bro. TRY TO RESIST! (Also, props for roping in siblings… no easy task):
- She is a very talented singer.

AMAZIANS OF THE WEEK! Rin on the Rox
Name: Rin on the Rox (aka Erin and Roxanne)
Occupation: Pinaysian singing sensasians
Known for: Covering contemporary Pop and R&B heavyweights like Beyoncé, Ne-Yo, and Rihanna, racking up over 2 million views on YouTube, recording in a bathroom for better acoustics, becoming a household name when they appeared on Ellen last week.
We have to admit that we love Rin on the Rox in part because they remind us of us. Not because of how they look (they’re way younger and cuter). And certainly not because of how they sing (we wish). But because they’re two giggly best friends just doin’ their thing.
Thanks, Sally!

ROCK OF HONORASIAN: Cavil At Rest
Cavil at Rest singer/guitarist Ryan Hanh–that adorable, curly-mopped chap driving the white car you see above–was a military brat born in the UK, raised in Singapore, and dumped into the ‘burbs of Southern California. Because of his last name, I’d been convinced for time that his kinky ‘fro actually belied his blood heritage–and he was actually through-and-through Vietnamese, like me. I finally asked (he’s not). But, he maintains, he feels Asian. And I realized then that sometimes, that’s all that matters.
Cavil at Rest is your new favorite band. Look at all those dudes–from the top left, Matt, Taylor, Andy, Kelcey, and Ryan–so gosh-darn sweet-faced, so compact, so fashionably v-necked. Through their charged urban-hippie soul rock I pull references from MC5 to The Doobie Brothers to The Rolling Stones to The Potatomen to the southwestern guitarist that played at my friend Dan’s New Mexico wedding. That’s not a bad palette for a band from my coastal South Orange County homeland (which, as Jen will attest to, is a expensively ugly breeding ground for average tastes and mediocre spirits).
Lend an ear here. Enjoy.

ROCK OF ASIAN: The Color Turning
We’ve been listening to our adorable friend David’s band The Color Turning for like, years, now… but we’re still pretty dang excited about them. They’re currently wrapping a new record and we can’t wait to hear it. Check out TCT’s gentle vocal harmonies and charged beats on MySpace, or peruse the gorgeous photography on their most-chic official website. Trust us… it’ll turn you on.
