Let’s Not Call The “Gooks Of Hazzard” Tee Hipster Racism, Or Racism Against Asians, Let’s Just Call It Racism

Baker Skateboards’ “Gooks of Hazzard” t-shirt, featuring two of its sponsored professional skaters, Don Nguyen and Daniel Shimizu, seems like one of those ideas that started out as an inside joke between friends, got elaborated upon over a few bowls–Let’s make the General Lee a street tuner! And call it the “General Li,” he he–got further elaborated upon, within an inch of its life–More wordplay! Let’s call ‘em “good orr boys” since Asian accents are funny! And this shirt is funny! And we are oh-so-clever!–got approved, inexplicably, as a t-shirt design exactly one minute later, and got printed onto a baseball tee and pushed to market for $18.99 before Visine ever hit the clouded eye.

It’s a shame Baker didn’t spend more time fleshing out this idea–no pun intended–because it seems all they left out in the execution of this tee was only the most important figure in this familiar cast of characters–and of course I’m talking about the racist corollary to Daisy Duke and her short shorts. I mean, just think of the possibilities. Lazy Gooks, anyone?!

The Asian American Justice Center has issued a statement protesting this shirt that said, in part:

“Baker Skateboards, and the outlets that sell this shirt, should be aware that use of the term ‘gook’ on their apparel is offensive and quite simply amounts to racism for sale. No one should seek to profit from racism.”

Media reaction, however, has been limited and, I’d venture to say, highly forgiving. TMZ, Continue reading Let’s Not Call The “Gooks Of Hazzard” Tee Hipster Racism, Or Racism Against Asians, Let’s Just Call It Racism

Go Blue

October 9th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

To the Vietnamese-American readers that I may have hated on too quickly this week, because of their undying, ungodly, unexplainable commitment to the support of Sen. McCain:

Hey. I’m sorry for calling you “gooks.” That was really rude, huh? Here’s the thing–I say–I was joking with a veteran–I hate to even go into this. I was joking with an old veteran friend, who joked with me, about Vietnam…. well anyway. I’m not really sorry.

So, anyhoozle, I think there’s a way for you fucking head-up-your-ass, middle-class-fearing, Vietnamese McCain supporters to redeem yourselves in my judgmental eyes us to bridge the gap between us and allow us to be straight with each other again.

The Obama campaign is in dire need of Vietnamese-speaking volunteers to spread the good word and explain what’s what on the issues (think of it as missionary work) to the large Viet community there. The staff can train you, explain the issues, and help you help us. HELP US. Get on your moped and skedaddle over to Virginia. IF YOU WANT US TO BE COOL AGAIN, that is, then HELP US ALL.

Ma peeps!!!

xoxo

Asian-Americans May Nip The Vote

October 6th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Via Hyphen today, we stumbled upon an encouraging analysis of recent studies compiled by Rutgers, Cal, USC, and UCR: Asian voters could tip the scales towards Obama in many battleground states.

Perhaps you said what I said: WOOHOO! WE RULE! WE’LL WIN THIS THING! I’M SO PSYCHED ABOUT MY FELLOW YELLOWS!

…’Cuz if that’s what happens on November 4, we really will rule and I deserve to be super psyched.

Of course, as we continued to peruse through the rest of the facts about voters that have decided on their candidate, one glaring fact did emerge and pop our celebratory bubble:

“…two-thirds of Vietnamese Americans said they support Mr. McCain.”

Uh–what? Gotta ask all ma peeps now: WHY? Is it because yer all like, “He totally fought those fucking Cong Commies!” or “We ran away from big government, muthafucka, we ain’t goin’ down like that again!” or “I like that Palin lady–she’s spunky!” or “He only said he’ll ‘hate the gooks’ for as long as he’s alive, and that couldn’t possibly be very much longer?”

Um, well, at least I’m super psyched about a third of my fellow American gooks.
