People, can we please stop using the phrase “Asian Invasion” to describe the new Renaissance of Asian fashion designers? KTHXBAI. [CNN]

A belated happy birthday to our favorite North Korean dick-tator, Kim Jong-Il, who just celebrated his 69th in typical lavish fashion. One party foul, though: no food rations. [NYM]

Manny Pacquiao was just in Washington D.C., where he met President Obama for a photo-op. Afterwards, we hear he knocked Vice President Biden out big-time in a thumbwrestling match. [NYT]

Check yo’ rage… and yo’ bank balance! Brokeass Chicago college students Sung Wong Chung and Alexander Choi violently attack a cab driver after their credit card bounces. [Chicago Breaking News - thanks, Diana L.!]

DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK: Rutgers Students Dharun Ravi And Molly Wei

October 1st, 2010 | 25 comments | Posted by Jen

By now you’ve all heard of Rutgers freshman Tyler Clementi, who jumped off the George Washington bridge to his death last week. He was 18 years old, a talented violinist in his first month of college, and he was gay. We presume that last fact made it okay, in his roommate Dharun Ravi’s mind, for Ravi to secretly install a webcam in the room they shared. From the computer of Molly Wei, Ravi’s high school classmate and fellow Rutgers freshman, a sexual encounter Clementi had with another man was then livestreamed by Ravi and Wei onto the Internet. Ravi even tweeted it, from an account that has been deleted.

Three days later, Clementi killed himself. Ravi and Wei have since been charged with two Continue reading DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK: Rutgers Students Dharun Ravi And Molly Wei

President Obama: You Better, You Better, You Bet

January 27th, 2010 | 1 comment | Posted by Diana

Hi President Obama,

We hear from David Axelrod that during tonight’s State of the Union, you will ask Congress to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

We’ll be watching and listening. Sure hope Axelrod isn’t fucking around.

Good luck with the speech! Knock ‘em dead.

xoxo,
DISGRASIAN

Cotton Candy, Sweet And Low, Reprzentasian In The Super Bowl!

January 25th, 2010 | 7 comments | Posted by Diana

THE SAINTS ARE FINALLY GOING TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep your eyes on amazian linebacker Scott Fujita (aka “Asian Assassin”) when they do.

Damn

That’s not actually asking much. Last night, during the NFC Championship shootout/battle royale/best game of the season, it was hard to look at anything else. When Fujita wasn’t putting pressure on Brett Favre, he and Anthony Hargrove were tackling him hard.

Ninjas Hate Joe Lieberman

October 15th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

A man dressed as a ninja and waving nunchucks was arrested this week for standing on a street corner in Vernon, CT, and making a ruckus about wanting to beat up Senator Joe Lieberman. When police approached the ninja with tasers, it was reported that the stealth, would-be senator-beater became “polite and cooperative.”

While a) identifying your target openly and b) becoming “polite and cooperative” when the authorities arrive don’t exactly sound like typical ninja behaviors, who hasn’t wanted to get all shinobi-wan-kenobi on Lieberman’s party-flip-flopping assssss?

But hold on there, Lieberman-haters. Because it appears Obama’s putting the old grimacing malcontent, who sits on the Senate Armed Services Committee, in charge of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. Looks like we need him on our side, at least for the time being.

Although if he effs this up, ninjas…to the rooftops, we say!

AMAZIAN OF THE WEEK! Dan Choi

March 23rd, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Name: 1st Lieutenant Dan Choi

Occupation: National Guardsman with the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, based in Manhattan

Known for: Graduating from West Point with degrees in Arabic Language and Environmental Engineering, serving an extended tour of combat in Baghdad during the Iraq War, and founding Knights Out–an advocacy and education organization of soldiers that strives for the best possible leadership in the military, regardless of sexual orientation. Choi, joined by the other members of Knights out, are coming out publicly to defy the disingenuous policy of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Choi told the Navy Times, “I’m very comfortable with all the repercussions right now. To me, it’s about doing the right thing, not about trying to fit into the process that gets you the rank or prevents you from getting a discharge. If that’s the repercussion, I’m ready to take it. I think it’s more important that I let everybody know that … it is a wrong policy.” (For more regarding KO, See Choi’s interview with Rachel Maddow above)

We almost wish we were cadets so that we could join Knights Out, a surefire way to be associated with a military man boasting actual balls of steel.

Who Is Sato Masuzawa?

February 23rd, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

After Sean Penn’s Best Actor acceptance speech at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, a lot of people were wondering who Sato Masuzawa was, i.e. the person Sean called his “best friend” and thanked first. Especially after he didn’t thank his wife, Robin Wright Penn, whom he attended the awards show with, an omission he later explained as intentional.

As it turns out, Sato Masuzawa is Sean Penn’s assistant. She has worked for him since 1998, according to IMDb. I suppose that, in a town where many people are married to their careers, giving a shout-out to your assistant rather than your wife makes perfect sense. But if I were Robin Wright Penn, I would be filing for a divorce again right about now.

BABEWATCH: Ashwin Madia

September 2nd, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

Name: Ashwin “Ash” Madia

Age: 30

Occupation: Congressional candidate & Iraq War veteran

Hails from: Minnesota

Why He’s a Babe: What’s really hot in Minnesota right now? Ashwin Madia, that’s what. The former Marine Corps Captain is currently running for Congress in the 3rd District of Minnesota. Born in Boston to immigrant parents from Mumbai, Ash grew up in the Land of 10,000 Lakes before going to NYU Law School and serving in Iraq. And you know we love a man in uniform. We also love that he’s a former Republican who’s realized the error of his ways. And the fact that when he talks about patriotism, he gets all Clint Eastwood-squinty, like he’s going to kick your ass. Also, Ash hearts the gays (and LGBT rights), and so do we! So, yeah, basically he’s our dream boyfriend. Er, we mean, candidate.
