If you’re anything like us, you find yourself more and more often shaking your head in despair at the state of this nation’s population, because it’s starting to feel like everybody is just really, REALLY STUPID. Like, you can’t even relax, you can’t hope for things to start making sense, you cannot escape a deep and lingering sense of agita because, by golly, it really seems like most Americans are not playing with a full deck of cards.
A great deal of the people, at least:
Then, no doubt, you are disturbed by the results of the new World Public Opinion study taken after November’s U.S. midterm elections, which were released this week and reflected an alarming state of confusion in voters on the country’s most pivotal issues. [FYI, the study included 616 self-reported voters that were chosen scientifically to represent the U.S. population, with a margin of error plus or minus 3.9%]
45% percent of voters thought that most scientists believe climate change is not occurring, despite the fact that the National Academy of Sciences has concluded that it is. 40% of voters incorrectly believed that the TARP legislation was initiated under Obama, not Dubya. 53% of voters said that most economists have concluded that Obamacare will increase the budget deficit, despite the fact that the Congressional Budget Office has concluded that law would actually reduce the deficit.
And what about the Republican voters who made such a big bang during those fateful midterms? 64% didn’t think it clear that Obama was born in the United States and 72% were convinced the economy is still getting worse (even though the Department of Commerce says otherwise, with June ’09 marking the official end to the recession). But before you lefties get smug, know that Dems aren’t off the hook: 18% weren’t sure about Continue reading Phew? We’re Not Stupid; We’re Misinformed

Today marks the 69th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. And nothing says “honoring the dead” or “remembering the fallen” quite like… “BUY MY CRAPTASTICALLY WRITTEN HISTORICAL NOVELS.”
(And, hey, you can currently buy both of these books at the special discounted price of $10.09 at Newt’s Official Online Store! Take that, Radical Secular-Socialism!)

For a nation of immigrants, America’s fast becoming a country of self-haters.
You see this not only in an anti-immigration law like Arizona’s recently-passed SB 1070, but also in the “This is America, speak English” movement that’s been rearing its ugly head all over the country lately.
Teabaggers everywhere are saying you better learn it if you want to live here.
Alabama GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim James is saying you better learn it if you want to drive here (see below).
And the Arizona Department of Education is saying you not only better learn it if you want to teach here, you better speak it without a foreign accent, comprende?
But look. Is it such a terrible idea to get rid of people in this country who can’t speak, read, or write in our unofficial official language? I know, I know, it sounds crazy. And racist. And fascist. And, um, racist? But what would you say if I proposed we start here:

Before she took the stage at the Tea Party Convention, Sarah Palin told Chris Wallace of Fox News that she was open to running for President in 2012.
Were she to run (the words “Palin” and “win” and “2012″ should never be spoken or imagined in concert), I think Jen and I would need about 579 guest blogging friends to help us deal with the onslaught of American shame. We simply couldn’t cover that amount of content. Our fingers would melt.

You never know, as garbage-feeding bloggers, whether or not you’ll get fucked by the wrong famous-for-nothing going sober or the world’s worst couple getting divorced. Will you run out of sordid news fodder? What might you have to complain about? Will your blogging career be downgraded to a month-long series of clever Facebook status updates and a few choice tweets? Oh lordy, the stress!
So it’s always good to know that the world will soon be hit by a fruitful period of shame, therefore guaranteeing you good work for months and months to come (dare I say it–years?).
Imagine my relief, friends, when I saw this breaking news today:
Phew. Phew, phew, phew. 2010 is going to be a busy year for DISGRASIAN!
On Monday, former NYPD detective, private investigator, and FOX News regular Bo Dietl went on Don Imus’s Imus in the Morning and managed to insult both Katie Couric and Asians in the span of a minute-and-a-half.
Take a look:
SUMMARY OF OFFENSES:
- “She’s got her eyes pulled so far, she’s starting to look Chinese herself.”
Look, as much as I’ve wanted Katie Couric to be an honorary member of the tribe since her thorough dismantling of Sarah Palin during the presidential campaign–which Palin’s still crying about–there’s no way that even I could say homegirl passes:

Oh, Ralph Nader. It has to be said–when it takes a Fox News anchor to call you out on a racial slur, you’ve really hit rock bottom.
Time, we think, to call it.
