DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! The Oil Spill Only Gets Worse

July 30th, 2010 | 5 comments | Posted by Diana

Well, everybody, it’s been 100 Days since the BP Oil Spill and apparently there’s good news!

Apparently, BPs oil dispersants have so effectively caused oil to disappear from the surface of the Gulf that even the cleanup jobs are drying up! Hooray! Great job, BP!!!

But wait. Oh wait.

It looks like a group of scientists (hired by the lawyers suing BP) have analyzed the results from their testing of the waters. And apparently the dispersants (which include the chemical Corexit) being used to clear the water’s surface are ACTUALLY EVEN MORE TOXIC THAN THE OIL.

From today’s NYT:

“This is a management decision, to use dispersants,” College of William and Mary marine science professor Robert Diaz said yesterday. “It doesn’t make the oil go away, it just puts it from one part of the ecosystem to another.”

That dispersed oil now hovers, diluted in the water column, posing a challenge for scientists to track and measure the subsea plumes. Mapping the long-term effects of the nearly 2 million gallons of dispersant used by BP PLC may well be Continue reading DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! The Oil Spill Only Gets Worse

Yellow Is Mellow, But Black Is Wack in Microsoft’s Polish Advertising

August 27th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

A couple of days ago, TechCrunch reported on a curious case of race-swapping that they discovered on two identical Microsoft marketing sites. In the U.S. version of the site, a photo of an Asian man, a black man, and a white woman could be seen on Microsoft’s “Business Productivity Infrastructure” home page:

But in the Polish version of the same site, the head of the black man had been photoshopped out and replaced with that of a white man:

After the blogosphere caught wind of this, the Polish site was changed, and the black man restored to the photo. Microsoft apologized Wednesday for this racial switcheroo and stated that they were “looking into the details of this situation.”

Presumably that also means they’ve fired the photoshop guy who not only did the horrible cut-and-paste job on the replacement head–notice its distinct Linda-Blair-in-The Exorcist-head-swivel–but left in the black hand, and, perhaps most devastatingly for Microsoft, failed to notice, unlike several savvy commenters over at Photoshop Disasters, that the computer in front of the black/not-black guy is an Apple MacBook(!).

Finally, Asians Score Well on a Test!

The following headline appeared in the Wall Street Journal today:

At first I was like, “Fucking woo-hoo! We rule!”

And yeah, we do rule, as the ethnic group taking the largest strides with rising SAT scores last year.

But then I realized that the numbers tell a darker story: that a generation’s worth of education reform in our country has failed to strengthen the overall performance of all minority groups.

Which means we’ve all failed.

Fuck! Boo.

DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! A 63 Year-Old Broken Promise

February 6th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

We’re going to be perfectly honest with you. We don’t really understand the $900 billion dollar stimulus bill. We can’t say how it will help Americans or even if it will help. We know it’s a buttload of money, and our economy is in the shitter. We also know that when President Obama says, about the bill, “(T)he package is the right size,” we trust the guy, because we’re confident he knows from right-sized packages, if ya know what we mean.

There’s a $198 million provision in the stimulus plan to provide benefits for Filipino veterans who fought for the U.S. in World War II. Approximately 250,000 Filipino men served in the U.S. Armed Forces at that time. FDR promised the benefits in 1941, but Congress reneged on the deal in 1946. Today, only 18,000 of those veterans are still alive, and about 7,000 of them are U.S. citizens. Their average age is 90 years old, and they are staring down the barrel of mortality, like all WWII vets, who are dying at a rate of 850 men per day.

The $198 million allotment gives these veterans a one-time, lump sum payment of $15,000 dollars if they are citizens, and $9,000 if they are not. Although the $198 mil is a miniscule part of the stimulus package, it is being cited as an emblem of the bill’s wastefulness, particularly by Republicans like Rep. Steve Buyer of Indiana, who sits on the House Veterans’ Affairs committee (paging Eric Shinseki and the newly-appointed Tammy Duckworth). But then we read this week that, if the stimulus bill passes, the money for these Filipino veterans would not technically come out of that package. The money was already appropriated in another bill that passed last year, and the stimulus legislation would simply release that money.

See what we mean about confusing?

But there’s one thing we’re not confused about. These brave, deserving veterans who risked their lives for this country in WWII–for fuck’s sake–need to get paid. They’ve been jerked around for 63 years while our Congress has played with their dicks and waited for them to die. Can you think of anything more disgraceful than that?
