Look Into The Eyes Of A DUI

January 18th, 2011 | 1 comment | Posted by Diana

The Huntington Beach City Council in Huntington Beach, CA votes tonight on a proposal to publish the mug shots of repeat DUI offenders on the city’s Facebook page.

HB–a 200k-person town with a high douchebag content–is a town I know very well from my years growing up in Orange County. With a downtown area packed with bumpin’ bars, the city apparently ranks number 1 of 56 similar-sized SoCal cities for the highest number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities–in 2009, 195 people were killed or injured and there were 1,687 DUI arrests.

Now, let me pause for a second and say that I write this post during a visit to my “second home” of a small town in Oregon, and just discovered that a well-known local idiot with priors hit and killed a 26-year-old woman who was walking her bike home from work last week in Portland. He was stupidly driving two friends home, shitty drunk and speeding. After spending much of today reading online reports about his charges and the fallout of her death–the bikers’ blog posts, the grieving statements from her family and friends, the public vigil–I am filled with a deep sense of sadness, anger and frustration. I hate the story. I hate that the former slaps on the wrists and multiple friend interventions never hampered his alcohol intake and poor choices. I hate that an innocent person is dead, gone forever from everyone who loves her, because some dude was having a rad, ragin’ night.

So I am in a particular state of mind while considering whether or not the Huntington Beach proposal is a good idea.

Is public shaming ever effective? According to AP reports, which cite multiple short-lived attempts to maintain similar Facebook-photo-shaming campaigns in other cities, the jury is still out. Opposition of this proposal is high–for a variety of reasons–even though it is legal for police to publish arrest photos. But I can’t help but wonder if the potential for web humiliation, however unsavory it may seem, could motivate friends and family members to press harder on someone who’s showing a habit of driving under the Continue reading Look Into The Eyes Of A DUI

And People Say We’re Bad Drivers

Sad news from northern California: yesterday, a casino-bound charter bus (pictured) crashed, killing eight people and injuring 35. When I hear “casino-bound bus,” I, of course, think “bus full of Asians,” and sure enough, most of the passengers were Laotian. In what can only be described as the epitome of “adding insult to injury,” driver Quintin Joey Watts was arrested today on suspicion of driving the bus under the influence.

Scientific Experimentasian

After Barron Hilton, the third of four children in Rick and Kathy’s party brood, was busted for DUI in the ‘Bu yesterday, I got to wondering…would things have turned out differently if the 18 year-old had had a Hardass Asian Parent or two?

Below, please find…a scientific experiment:

HYPOTHESIS

Barron Hilton would not be a fuckup had he been raised by a Hardass Asian Parent.

EXPERIMENT

1) HARDASS ASIAN PARENT: Why can’t you be more like your sisters?

BARRON HILTON: Uh, no probs.

2) HARDASS ASIAN PARENT: I take it back. Your sisters are dead to me. You’re now my only hope.

BARRON HILTON: Dude, what’s with the pressure? You’re giving me a fuckin’ anxiety attack. I gotta go smoke a bowl, man. Late.

3) HARDASS ASIAN PARENT: When you first told me that you received a DUI, I thought it was a school award or a scholarship. Now that I know the truth, I am severely disappointed. Drinking and driving? Where did you learn such degrading behavior? We don’t even drink. My heart is breaking into a thousand pieces. Do you want to give me heart attack? You’ll regret what you’ve done when I’m dead. Speaking of which, you are dead to me. I have no choice but to disown you.

BARRON HILTON: Whoa, whoa, so many words. I still get my inheritance, right?

CONCLUSION

Even if Barron Hilton had been raised by Hardass Asian Parents, he would still be a fuckup.

Dearest Daniel Dae Kim (aka Jen’s boyfriend)

We heard that you may have been hexed by the Lost cast’s curse of DUI busts last night. Hey! Don’t worry– we aren’t judging you. It happens to the best of us, and we’ve already written a list of other people/things to blame (let us know if you want to see it).

Anyway, next time you’re feeling too tipsy to drive, please PLEASE just call Jen. She and/or I will be happy to come pick you up and we’re only a 4-hour flight across the Pacific from your Hawaii set. There might have to be a night spent, or whatever, but we’ll discuss that when the time comes.

Love,
Diana (aka your girlfriend’s friend)

P.S. Please wear shirts less. Thanks.
