ROCK OF ASIAN: New Album from Maia Hirasawa! GBGvsSTHLM

September 9th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Our love for Maia Hirasawa is longstanding, and it hurts us that her new album, GBGvsSTHLM, has only been granted a Scandinavian release.

(But hi! That’s what makes the Internet so darned fun. We can buy imports with just a click!)

With GBGvsSTHLM, Hirasawa displays the beautiful benefits of maturation, somehow trumping her debut effort (Though, I’m Just Me) by adding a distinct polish to her quirky confidence. The payoff is an album that is both strong and sophisticated; ballsy, yet thoughtful and restrained. In short, it’s womanly.

Don’t worry, growing up doesn’t take the fun out of everything. “Hush Now” opens the record with her signature girlish tone, and “The Wrong Way” will satisfy those desperate to hear a successor to “And I Found This Boy.” But a duet with Nicolai Dunger, called “Come With Me,” actually begins to crack Hirasawa’s brightly-colored shell, allowing us her vulnerable side and, ironically, her inside voice.

Should you need any more reason to be excited at this point, allow me to share the video for the new album’s first single, “South Again,” which has all of the freshness of a hip hop track tucked into a folksy, classically-touched ditty:

Like growing up, it’s futile to resist. Give in!

It Sure Ain’t

Japanese pop star Kumi Koda releases her 40th single next month. The release will include a duet track with that hot mess you see above, Fergie.

Shockingly, the duet doesn’t appear to be weighty enough to warrant its own release, although OhNoTheyDidn’t readers have already posted the track, “That Ain’t Cool.”

Oh, that pretty much explains it. It sure as heck ain’t.

I Believe In Celine and Yuna!

December 18th, 2007 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Guess biz-nas in US have been slow for Dion since she got dropped as the official songstress of HRC’s campaign and took her last bow in Vegas! Celine “Da Diva” Dion has apparently now spread her wings towards the ATMs audiences of Japan, releasing a beautiful new duet with J-Pop star Yuna Ito:

Oh boy! From the soft, meaningful hand grasp at the song’s opening measure, to the creepy intimate eye contact throughout, to the scary hug and awkward thumbs-up warm embrace at the end, this beautiful collaborasian drips with sincerity! No way does it reek of Ka-Ching Chong!

Karaoke Drives People Karay-zy

July 3rd, 2007 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

Here’s a bizarre story coming out of South Korea, “South Korean tycoon jailed for karaoke assault”:

Prosecutors said Kim Hanwha Group chairman Kim Seung-youn and several bodyguards stormed into an upscale Seoul karaoke bar in mid-March, seeking those responsible for attacking his son earlier that month.

Kim seized several workers, shuttled them off to a remote mountain area and forced them to their knees while he beat them, they said.

Kim has since been sentenced to 18 months in jail for the crime. Kinda stiff when you consider this: “Bush Spares Libby From Prison Term.”

Who wants to duet with me on ‘Summer Nights’? Anybody? Really? Nobody? Oh. Someone git my drunk daughters up here so I can do this goddamn song.
