Look Into The Eyes Of A DUI

January 18th, 2011 | 1 comment | Posted by Diana

The Huntington Beach City Council in Huntington Beach, CA votes tonight on a proposal to publish the mug shots of repeat DUI offenders on the city’s Facebook page.

HB–a 200k-person town with a high douchebag content–is a town I know very well from my years growing up in Orange County. With a downtown area packed with bumpin’ bars, the city apparently ranks number 1 of 56 similar-sized SoCal cities for the highest number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities–in 2009, 195 people were killed or injured and there were 1,687 DUI arrests.

Now, let me pause for a second and say that I write this post during a visit to my “second home” of a small town in Oregon, and just discovered that a well-known local idiot with priors hit and killed a 26-year-old woman who was walking her bike home from work last week in Portland. He was stupidly driving two friends home, shitty drunk and speeding. After spending much of today reading online reports about his charges and the fallout of her death–the bikers’ blog posts, the grieving statements from her family and friends, the public vigil–I am filled with a deep sense of sadness, anger and frustration. I hate the story. I hate that the former slaps on the wrists and multiple friend interventions never hampered his alcohol intake and poor choices. I hate that an innocent person is dead, gone forever from everyone who loves her, because some dude was having a rad, ragin’ night.

So I am in a particular state of mind while considering whether or not the Huntington Beach proposal is a good idea.

Is public shaming ever effective? According to AP reports, which cite multiple short-lived attempts to maintain similar Facebook-photo-shaming campaigns in other cities, the jury is still out. Opposition of this proposal is high–for a variety of reasons–even though it is legal for police to publish arrest photos. But I can’t help but wonder if the potential for web humiliation, however unsavory it may seem, could motivate friends and family members to press harder on someone who’s showing a habit of driving under the Continue reading Look Into The Eyes Of A DUI

United Colors Of Drunk Chicks

April 1st, 2010 | 6 comments | Posted by Diana

Berkeley “performance artist” Philip Huang pulled a new video stunt recently, asking people on the mean streets of Cal’s college town to decide who is more annoying: drunk Asian girls or drunk White girls.

I don’t quite know what Huang is going for, but hey, whatever. I’m glad he’s going for it. That said, is anybody else a little surprised to see that most people willing to answer the question pegged Asian chicks as the worst offenders?

I, for one, am a firm believer that all stupid, drunk chicks are intolerable–and this is an equal judgment applicable to every race, creed, and color. Y’all are horrible.

Don’t know if you’re horrible? Here are 10 Signs that you are a fucking intolerable drunk chick:

1. You can’t remember how many malibu and diet cokes you’ve consumed.
2. You’re hitting on my boyfriend.
3. Whenever anyone says the word “sake,” you say something like, “Sake to me!” and erupt into laughter.
4. You’ve spilled something wet and sweet on me, and I’m not thanking you for it.
5. I’ve been glaring at you for an hour.
6. That part of your shirt meant for boobs is currently at your neck.
7. I’ve threatened to hit you.
8. You keep “requesting” songs from the jukebox.
9. You smell like butt, old hair, vomit, and Hypnotiq.
10. I hate you. Like, really hate you.

Sure, Two Wrongs Don’t Make Right-Wing…

The 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference, affectionally known as CPAC, is under way as we speak in our nation’s capital.

Conservationists. No wait, Conservatives.

In today’s update on the conference goings-on, HuffPo pulled this choice quote from Jason Mattera of the Young America’s Foundation:

“Our notion of freedom doesn’t consist of snorting cocaine, which distinguishes us from Barack Obama.”

Oh ho ho ho ho! ZING!

Can’t help but wonder, though: does the conservative notion of freedom include driving drunk, getting arrested, and  gobbling pharmaceutical heroin? Just wondering.

(Cock-sure commenters, we know that everybody’s parsing words. But this shit is seriously SO SILLY.)

Gwyn or Lose

Fuck the haters!

MY GOODNESS! “FUCK THE HATERS?” Is Gwyneth Paltrow taking cues from DISGRASIAN Hall-of-Shamers Kobe and Tila, or just trying desperately to strategically sully her organic-cotton-Coldplay-and-Apple-babies-yoga-granola image?

As she “spilled” to OK! Magazine: “I’m probably less square than people think,” she insists. “I never get drunk to the point of throwing up. But I get very talkative.”

Oh, she gets talkativezzZZZzZzZZZZzzz when zzZshezzZZzz ZzzzZdrinkszzzzZzZzz! I’m sure that would cool our hating jets if we caredzzZZZzzzZzZZz.

It’s disgraceful enough to sell a jumbo-sized Drunk Anti-Semite Mel Gibson cutout on eBay, and quite another thing to awkwardly sell your poorly-dressed, half-stoned self along with it.

However, if you’re interested, bid here.
