ROCK OF ASIAN: Groove Nation’s Viral K-Pop Homage

February 2nd, 2011 | 1 comment | Posted by Diana

A Vancouver (Not Whistler Mountain Vancouver, but the Vancouver, WA near PDX airport) dance company from Groove Nation studio entered a competition last month–with a routine that choreographer Julio Fuentes set to 8 minutes of K-Pop music.

Not a common choice for an American high schoolers’ dance troupe! Fuentes even posted a video of the performance on YouTube. And as you can see, it’s sassy and adorable.:

What Fuentes didn’t expect is that the little video of his teens dancing their hearts out in a gym would suddenly take off globally. It quickly went viral in South Korea, and currently has 515,143 views.

What’s more, YouTube’s trendwatchers report that Groove Nation’s second performance, posted two days ago, was among the Most Shared Videos in South Korea, as well as one of the most watched videos among South Korean girls ages 13-17. It already has nearly 22,000 views.

Ya gotta hand it to South Koreans–they know how to give ‘net love. Which has me thinking… JEN, GRAB YOUR LEOTARD. WE’RE MAKING A K-POP DANCE VIDEO!

Chang Chang Is Here To Cheer Up Your Tuesday

October 12th, 2010 | 8 comments | Posted by Jen

Y’all, I just read that Tuesday is the unhappiest day of the week. Which has made me really–you guessed it–unhappy. But here’s a little something to turn our collective frown upside down.

She goes by “Chang Chang.”

She’s twelve years old.

And she whips her hair back and forth, she whips her hair back and forth…

I don’t even know if she’s Asian, but it hardly matters, because we’ll draft her one way or another, and convince her to be our official DISGRASIAN choreographer-in-residence, wherein she’ll teach us how to whip our hair on our smoke breaks.

Watch more Chang Chang videos on YouTube here and here.

Thanks, Bassey and Erica!

(Yes, the three dancing dudes are one and the same.)

Thanks, ScottyP!

Browning Around

March 5th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

News sources say that President Omar Al-Bashir of Sudan was spotted “smiling, dancing and speaking to a huge crowd of supporters Thursday, a day after a warrant was issued for his arrest on war crimes charges.”

Okay, that’s one way to show humility in the face of abysmal accusations. Sheezus, maybe he and Chris Brown share a gene or something.

Name: Ely Kim

Occupation: Yale MFA graduate student and dancer

Known for: The viral video “Boombox,” featuring Ely dancing to 100 songs in 100 locations over 100 days. It’s pure joie de vivre, set to some of your favorite pop and indie tunes. All we can say is we’re hooked. And we’d like to swap clothes and jewelry with him (Jen covets the gold lamé jacket he’s wearing at the 2:38 mark of the video), pull an all-nighter watching the Freaks and Geeks box set together, take him out to the Short Stop to go dancing, and make him our new BFF. Whaddya say, Ely?

Ladytron is going on tour across America with The Faint through April and is doing something nice for friends and family: giving the finger to Ticketmaster.

Our beloved robo-rockers set up a fee-free, pre-sale ticketing booth on their official site, and their shows will span the nation from the Northeast to the Middle and West.

We can’t wait to get our dance on. And if you can’t either, buy your tickets here.

See you there!

Dancing On the Ceiling of Sanjaya’s Head

January 7th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Sanjaya “Hell No I’m Not Gaysian” Malakar will soon release his first post-American Idol EP, “Dancing to the [techno/house remix and Madonna] Music in my Head.” Psyched? It’s available for pre-order on Amazon right now:

And somewhere, all huddled together in a room: the Debarge guys, Menudo kids, Lionel Richie, and Billy Ocean in fetal position on the floor, punching themselves in their respective neckmeats for not coming up with this album cover themselves.

OMG, OMG you guys! CSS (who we love, cuz their singer Lovefoxxx is an effing sexy babe, and oh, cuz we love to dance and they’re hella fun to dance to) has a new record coming out in five days!

It’s called “Donkey.” Donkeys are pretty cool–Democrats are donkeys, Shrek has a donkey, donkey punches make us laugh, and a donkey in the sun could also be called “hot ass.”

Pre-order your copy of Donkey today and meet us back here in a week for a hip-shaking rager! We’ll bring the chex mix and boombox, you bring the booze. (Note: Bring a lot.)

ROCK OF ASIAN: The Teenagers

June 4th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Most who know me are familiar with the fact that I pretty much loathe teenagers. I hated teenagers when I was a teenager. They ruin movies, they swarm like locusts through shopping malls, they wear mind-boggling fashion combos like winter coats and short-shorts. I could really do without them and their pack mentality and their skinny legs and their tendency to make every statement sound like a question…right? Like, “I can’t believe I have to go to my mom’s stupid candle party…right?”

But in rock, as in love, life truths do not always apply. And when it comes to music, everything for me is flipped upside-down–I fall hard for teenagers, like hardcore. Teen Heroes, Teenage Fanclub, Imperial Teen. In tunes, “teen” rhymes with “Ween,” and Ween is incredible. So there you go. My logic for the day.

Ergo, it is of no surprise to me that I’ve been suckered by The Teenagers, a French indie-pop trio that is as plucky as a chicken while still preserving a semblence of pop sensibility.

Don’t know what that means? Try:

See more silly things here.

Thank u, jRu!

Step It Asian

April 4th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

We don’t know about you guys, but we foresee a bit of an obsession with Bravo’s new eliminasian series, Step It Up & Dance. Jesse Spano Elizabeth Berkley? People getting served in dance-offs? Sometimes we wonder if there is anything more to life at all.*

This season, we’ve definitely got our eye on Michelle, a 30-year old Filipina whose mom was a dancer too (saucy!) and refers to herself as “Mochi.”

The jury’s still out on the nickname Mochi, though. We certainly have a hard time referring to anybody that isn’t soft and gooey with a sweet red bean paste inside as such. But maybe that’s just something she hasn’t divulged yet. Let us know if you hear anything!

*We asked 10 people on the street just now. There isn’t.

Thanks, jRu!

ROCK OF ASIAN: David Jordan

February 13th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Sure, you could argue that the UK’s new golden boy David Jordan has an unhealthy appreciation for Justin Timberlake’s pops and Lenny Kravitz’s locks… but hell, my friend jRu and I love a pretty guy that can sing, dance, and remind us more of Prince than anyone right now besides, well, Prince.

Set the mood with his funky new album (entitled: “Set the Mood”–get it?) or just see more Jordan here.

xo, jRu!

ROCK OF ASIAN: White Shoes & the Couples Company

January 16th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

As a proud Jungle Asian, I have a very serious soft spot for my brethren bred in the tropicalia of Southeast Asia.

So please join me in delighting at the summery, salty sounds of White Shoes & the Couples Company: a chic little sextet from Indonesia that makes the soft, lingering beats of bossa nova and samba seem fresh, and vintage beachy looks oh-so-au courant.

They’ll be crossing the pond to the west to join us for SXSW this year… we just hope they’re willing to party (dancing gently to island tunes) with us in Austin!
