AMAZIAN OF THE WEEK: R.I.P. John Delloro

June 7th, 2010 | 4 comments | Posted by Diana

It’s difficult to believe even as we write the words: Our friend John Delloro died suddenly on Saturday from a heart attack. He was 38.

Like our cohort Phil, we met John this year when he invited us to speak to his freshman Asian American Studies students at UCLA (God bless him, he was the first professor ever to cite us on a final exam). We instantly knew that John was a special person, pure soul and our brother from another mother–and we can only imagine the loss felt right now by those that have known and loved him longer. We only wish we’d had the pleasure.

John is certainly overdue for the honor of Amazian of the Week. In addition to his work in academia, he was a community leader, and a longstanding activist for labor unions and immigrant rights: he ran the Dolores Huerta Labor Institute, co-founded the Pilipino Workers Center of Southern California, sat on boards for the Koreatown Immigrant Workers Alliance and PWC, and organized for the SEIU as well as a number of other union groups. Never without action, he defined the word “activist.” And hell, with all those jobs and achievements, he also defined “Amazian.” No Hardass Asian Parent would disagree with that.

Since he was a reader and supporter of this site, we think that John would have been happy to see himself honored as this week’s Amazian. He would have probably wanted us to write more jokes in the post, but right now we just can’t seem to muster any.

We hold his family and friends in our thoughts, and know that right now he’s smiling that warm smile somewhere up in the sky.

BABEWATCH: Jane Kim

April 13th, 2010 | 6 comments | Posted by Diana

Name: Jane Kim

Occupation: President of the San Francisco Board of Education, civil rights attorney

Hails from: Ess Eff (via Enn Why)

Why She’s A Babe: Jane Kim is one of those people who has apparently spent their lives entirely devoted to doing cool shit for other people. She’s a community organizer, tenant advocate, civil rights attorney, and elected official with a CV that seems to go on for days. Her colorful career choices alone give us due cause to crush on her (Oh man, nothing says, “I’ll show YOU law school, Mom and Dad” better than becoming a civil rights attorney that supports the art community in her spare time), but let’s be real here. Chica is sa-mokin’ hot.

Kim has the flawless skin, dancing eyes, prominent cheekbones, shiny hair and pretty lips of a person that could get by despite the fact that they, y’know, kick small children and don’t recycle. But we’re pretty sure she doesn’t do that. In fact, she seems quite fond of all kinds of children. We found this description of her work with the Board of Education on her site:

Jane Kim has advocated for expanded access for immigrant families, more equitable distribution of district resources, and greater accountability by the administration to the community whom they serve. Jane has provided leadership on a number of important educational reforms including closing the achievement/opportunity gap, redesigning the student assignment process, and promoting policies that have decreased the suspension and expulsion rates at SFUSD.

Though she was just elected by her colleagues to President of the Board in January of this year, it appears she now has her eyes on another prize in November: The SF Board of Supervisors. Oh good. Yet another thing to add to that CV!

Alrighty. So she’s practically perfect. But does she RECYCLE?

A Message to You, Rudy

September 4th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Dear Rudy,

The next time you decide to spend prime stage time sneering and mocking Obama’s experience from two decades ago as a “community organizer,” perhaps you should consider the fact that your party’s current nominee for Vice President also cut her teeth as a… community organizer.

Oh wait, I’m sorry, every time I say “community organizer,” I’m supposed to smirk and chuckle, right?

Smirk.

Chuckle.

Y’all are awfully proud of Sarah Palin’s experience as a PTA member, aren’tcha? But wait one cotton pickin’ minute… isn’t the PTA a voluntary organization? Don’t members organize their communities in order to create positive change in schools? Hasn’t Sen. McCain lauded his running mate’s efforts at the community level, saying that running for the PTA reflected her courage? And doesn’t this courageous experience kinda make Palin’s history that of a, er, community organizer, y’know, before all of her extensive executive experience as a small-town mayor and um, foreign policy veteran (I’m so glad she’s dealt hands-on with all of that raging Canadian and Russian turmoil so that the rest of us wouldn’t have to)?

Rudy, does this community organizer black mark mean that she shouldn’t be hired, either? Urg, I’m so freakin’ confused here–am I supposed to smirk and chuckle now?

Hmm. Maybe I’ll just leave all of the smirking and chuckling to you.

Fuck right off, you raging idiot and failed Presidential candidate,

Diana
