ROCK OF ASIAN: Ninjasonik

November 4th, 2009 | 1 comment | Posted by Diana

Ninjasonik recently released the party track, “Tight Pants, which hails hip hop kids in tight pants as champions daring to be different. They send a lyrical shout-out to Uniqlo, our favorite Japanese low-cost outfitter and a prominent supplier of the “tight pants movement.”

But the props don’t stop there–Ninjasonik then teamed up with a bunch of Brooklyn cool kids (like my long-lost pal Jake Septimus) to produce a music video almost entirely composed of clips from Uniqlock, Uniqlo’s awesomely weird widget/microsite, which features emotionless scenes of models dancing in formation.

And WAITAMINUTE: Are those little fuzzy characters an homage to Miyazaki’s soot sprites? If so, we love this spot even MORE.

Check out more Ninjasonik, including the remix of Matt n Kim’s “Daylight,” (via ONTD), on MySpace.

What’s More Pathetic Than a Hipster Grifter?

April 21st, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

That’s easy! A hipster dude that once bought into Kari Ferrell’s charm and sassy sex-talk now peddling his Hipster Grifter memento on eBay.

The price is currently tipping the scales at $17.51. Should be just enough to buy this tool a couple of Pabst Blue Ribbons in Williamsburg.

ALRIGHTY! And now I’ll resume patiently waiting for the entire hipster population on this planet to expire. (I know, I know… but who will buy all of the very-tiny t-shirts? We’ll figure that out later.)

Thanks, Jennifer!

What happened to the Indie Rock Chick? When did that DIY lady get so pretty, preening, and slight? (Answer: right around Liz Phair’s third album and Courtney Love’s eighth nose job.) We’ve been waiting for the badass indie rock chick–cut from the beer- and sweat-soaked cloth of Kim Deal–to re-emerge for some time now, and we think we’ve found her in Renminbi. Although their name is the word for Chinese currency, Renminbi is Brooklyn-based and riot grrrl-rooted. Co-founders Lisa Liu (guitar, vocals) and SMV (keyboard, vocals) take us back to the early 90′s, when indie rock chicks could drink, smoke, shit-talk, and play anyone under the table and didn’t wear precious girly gear like leggings and shiny headbands. Despite being a three-piece (different drummers have cycled in and out) and not having a bass player, Renminbi still makes a big, badass, unapologetic rock-us. And that, friends, is what we call being “lady-like.”

Trade in your old currency here.

Thanks, Jennson!

We sure do like brassy ladies, and Kiai, a singer-songwriter from BrookLYYYN, is no exception. Don’t be fooled by that acoustic guitar, my friends–she often toggles between gentle refrains and feral, anti-folk riffs. We wonder if she listened to a lot of X when she was younger (cuz we sure did).

X-amine her closely here.
