AMAZIAN OF THE WEEK! 19-year-old Tehran Protest Photographer (Anon.)

June 22nd, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

Name: Anonymous

Age: 19

Occupation: Student

Hails from: Tehran, Iran

Known for: Sharing images with the world. While walking to Tehran’s Freedom Square for a demonstration Saturday, this young woman and fellow protesters were stopped and beaten by Iranian paramilitary forces. Though she had recently wept over the fallen body of fellow protester and the weekend’s public martyr, Neda, the 19-year-old woman made a risky decision to trick the officer accosting her into believing that she surrendered her digital photos of the protest on a disk. Instead, she escaped with the images and shared them immediately with CNN.

See more of her photographs (and catch repeats of her phone interview) on CNN‘s live news broadcast. A selection of the photos is also available here.

The Bravery

February 25th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Diana

This week on RuPaul’s Drag Race, my girl Ongina proved once again that she is the funnest and fiercest of all the fabulous bitches in the competition. My tiny queen won the Mac Viva Glam challenge, earning a spot as a spokesperson for the campaign.

But as she heard that she won, she broke down into sobs. And said the bravest thing I’ve ever heard on television, so much so that I’m ashamed to have seen it on something as fluffy as a standard-definition reality show:

“I just wanted to say, and I’ve always been so afraid to say it, that I’ve been living with HIV for the last two years of my life. And this means so much to me. I didn’t want to say it on national TV because my parents didn’t know–oh my God.

You have to celebrate life. You keep going. And I keep going.”

I can honestly tell you that I cried. All night.

ANTM’s Sheena Sakai: Bust-ed

September 11th, 2008 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

Sheena Sakai got busted for having fake TyTys last night on America’s Next Top Model. Paulina Porizkova asked her flat-out (so to speak) if her breasts were fake and Sheena said, “No, Ma’am,” which I imagine made the 43 year-old judge vomit in her pretty mouth because cool chicks married to rockers don’t cotton to being called “Ma’am.” (By the way, have you ever wondered what Paulina and Ric Ocasek talk about, like, over breakfast?) But Sheena had a change of heart and came forward again after all the girls had been addressed by the judges to, as she said, get something “off (her) chest” (around the 5:00 mark):

Which was an incredible set-up for Tyra to then have her Oprah moment and tell Sheena:

I knew your breasts were not real. But one thing that I feel is absolutely beautiful is that you stepped forward and you said, you know what, I’m gonna tell the truth.

And that’s when I vomited in my pretty mouth.

PREDICTION: After ANTM Cycle 11 is over, Tyra will have Sheena on The Tyra Banks Show for a Fake-Tits-Are-Baaaaaaaaaad story, we’ll go into the operating room with Sheena as she gets them taken out and Tyra holds her hand, telling her how “brave” she is, how beautiful she is on the inside and out, and how she’s a wonderful example to young girls everywhere.
