The December issue of American Vogue has a fashion story on a “new crop” of Asian models–never mind that most of them have been around for several years–who are, quoth the lady mag, “redefining traditional concepts of beauty.”
Which raises the question, “traditional concepts of beauty” where, exactly? Because there are plenty of places in the world where, traditionally speaking, Asian women have long been considered beautiful. Like in, um, Asia, for example? Even in Western countries, Asian beauty, for lack of a more specific term, isn’t a new concept (although, granted, sometimes, it’s a creepy, fetishy one.)
And since that covers 3/4 of the world’s population, what’s left?
Vogue magazine, that’s what.
Let’s think about this for a second: American Vogue has never featured an Asian model on its cover in its 40-plus years of featuring models on its cover (unless you count Blasian Naomi Campbell). American Vogue also has a dismal track record when it comes to featuring non-white models in general. So, by featuring a “new” crop of Asian models in its pages, American Vogue is “redefining traditional concepts of beauty” held by…American Vogue.
That’s enough self-referentiality to make an Asian chick’s fauxhawk spin right off of her suddenly-pretty head.

Occupation: Lawyer, mom, former beauty queen
Known for: Helping foreigners sitting in Afghan jails. The Daily Beast‘s Elise Jordan just profiled the daughter of an American dad and South Korean mom, mother of three and 2004 Miss Wisconsin, who is currently a registered attorney with the American, British, Italian, Norwegian, German, and Canadian Embassies and recently negotiated the release of high-profile Brit detainee Bill Shaw. Motley wears neither a dress, veil nor headscarf in trial and is, according to Jordan, “one of the most respected lawyers in Kabul.”
Motley, who was crowned Mrs. Wisconsin in 2004, grew up in Milwaukee and earned her law degree at Marquette University. She had never traveled outside the U.S. before she began working to rebuild Afghanistan’s legal system in 2008 as a part of the State Department’s Justice Sector Program. Traveling around the countryside—visiting women’s prisons, juvenile detention centers, and some of Afghanistan’s roughest and toughest jails—she found that “not only were due process violations being ignored for virtually all of the accused persons, but there were quite a few foreigners trapped within the legal and prison system,” she says.

EVA: Tell me again why I have to stand next to you?
ASH: Because we both work for L’Oreal, silly.
EVA: Could you at the very least have let me be the only one wearing the sparkly dress?
ASH: What, this old thing? I just threw it on at the last minute.
EVA: Uh…yeah, me too! Yup, just threw this on. Just like you. Don’t even know who designed it.
ASH: Didn’t I hear you tell that journalist over there it was Naeem Khan?
I know very little about Christina, a new American Apparel model that seems to be the only one using her eyes and angles (rather than her nipples) to sell the company’s body-conscious cotton. I don’t even know for sure if she’s Asian, or part Asian, but golly I hope so because…
I. AM. IN. LOVE. WITH. HER.
And come to think of it, I need a denim pencil skirt.

We’ve got a long history of knowing stalking Lynn Chen, an actress whose excessive beauty makes us want to rip our eyeballs out (Seriously, who in this world has got a cuter frown/smile? If such a person exists we need to take them down, too).
It looks like we shouldn’t only be threatened by her looks. She’s moving in on all fronts. Did y’all realize she blogs, too? Her blog with longtime friend and fellow actress Christy Meyers (also f’ing cute) is called The Actor’s Diet, and in it both ladies charmingly detail the way they eat (And no, they don’t write “just barf” in every post). Oh REALLY, Lynn? You think just ANYone can start a blog with their good friend that they eat/drink/gossip with all the time, just because, filling the blogoverse with sassy girlfriend chatter? HUH? Okay yeah, you can. Anybody can, really. So what?
NOW SHE’S MOVING IN OUR BOYFRIEND.

Happy birthday to the beautiful and talented Joan Chen, who turned 49 (???!?!?!?!?) this week!
We can’t believe it’s been 20 years since we fell for Chen’s mysterious eyes on Twin Peaks. Here’s a vintage scene from Season 2 to remind you how she could singlehandedly inspire sexy fantasies with just a blink of her eyelashes:
Um. It’s possible that her skin actually got smoother and more radiant over the years. Does she only get more interesting and sultry? How can we do that?

Name: Jane Kim
Occupation: President of the San Francisco Board of Education, civil rights attorney
Hails from: Ess Eff (via Enn Why)
Why She’s A Babe: Jane Kim is one of those people who has apparently spent their lives entirely devoted to doing cool shit for other people. She’s a community organizer, tenant advocate, civil rights attorney, and elected official with a CV that seems to go on for days. Her colorful career choices alone give us due cause to crush on her (Oh man, nothing says, “I’ll show YOU law school, Mom and Dad” better than becoming a civil rights attorney that supports the art community in her spare time), but let’s be real here. Chica is sa-mokin’ hot.
Kim has the flawless skin, dancing eyes, prominent cheekbones, shiny hair and pretty lips of a person that could get by despite the fact that they, y’know, kick small children and don’t recycle. But we’re pretty sure she doesn’t do that. In fact, she seems quite fond of all kinds of children. We found this description of her work with the Board of Education on her site:
Jane Kim has advocated for expanded access for immigrant families, more equitable distribution of district resources, and greater accountability by the administration to the community whom they serve. Jane has provided leadership on a number of important educational reforms including closing the achievement/opportunity gap, redesigning the student assignment process, and promoting policies that have decreased the suspension and expulsion rates at SFUSD.
Though she was just elected by her colleagues to President of the Board in January of this year, it appears she now has her eyes on another prize in November: The SF Board of Supervisors. Oh good. Yet another thing to add to that CV!
Alrighty. So she’s practically perfect. But does she RECYCLE?

Name: Karen Han
Occupation: Erhu (Chinese two-stringed violin) Virtuoso
Hails from: Los Angeles
Why She’s A Babe: Flawless Skin. Elegant Lines. A killer musical talent. And then some.
It was hard to take our eyes off of Han during the broadcast of the Oscars, in which her husband Paul N.J. Ottosson won two consecutive awards for Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing on The Hurt Locker. Now, winning is damn near everything to Asians, but when someone other than ourselves does the winning, it can be another story. In fact, one of the most of telling moments in any of our lives is watching someone else–particularly our partners–win.
See video of the acceptance speech:
