ROCK OF ASIAN: Kid Koala

Few tickle vinyl with such brilliant fervor as our favorite Canadiasian deejay Kid Koala, whose turntable-told stories fascinate us, and soft-spoken illustrative aesthetic somehow warms our icy cold hearts. Kids are cute, koalas even cuter– we hate to say this about the man, but he is CUTE with all capital letters. CUTE CUTE CUTE.
Check out Koala’s latest project, Your Mom’s Favorite DJ, out on Ninja Tune Records now.

ROCK OF ASIAN: Dan the Automator

Dan the Automator is, simply put, a total hero and and a hot mofo. He’s a sculptor of beats, a master of kitsch, a conceptual mastermind, and… a foodie. He takes pictures of yummy eats and puts them on MySpace–doesn’t that make him a man after our own hearts?
We’ve loved Automator for so long, we don’t know why he doesn’t hang out at our house and drink scotch with us while we download new songs for Rock Band on Xbox Live. Until then, we’ll have to make do with next week’s release of his latest and greatest, the soundtrack to Xbox’s NBA 2k spot, which features the likes of Mos Def, E-40, Ghost Face, A Tribe Called Quest, Lupe Fiasco, et al. After all, basketball and hot beats go together like Ramma Lamma Lamma Lamma… (you know the rest).
Or, he could just come over and hang out with us. Just putting it out there.

ROCK OF ASIAN
Jen and I rocked the house with M.I.A. at Los Angeles’ hipster haven Echoplex last night, and as always, the lady with lyrics was totally bitchin’ and the walls were shaking with her smooth rhymes and quaking beats. We tried to party like it was 1999 and shake our tailfeathers like we were at rave in 1997–but were totally upstaged by clusters of 100-lb. cutie music nuts adorned in enough gold bicycle shorts, ironic mustaches, and cropped leggings to make Terry Richardson cry.
Bottom line: M.I.A. kicks ass. We love her. And her fans.
Her new album Kala drops August 27 (and having heard it all, I must say it already puts her kick-ass debut LP Arular to shame)– but if you can’t wait, download a sneak peek here.
