Watch The “Chinese Adele” Sing “Someone Like You”

August 16th, 2012 | 4 comments | Posted by Jen

I don’t what it is about Adele’s voice, but it bugs. I can’t stand it. It’s so overwrought and what’s the word? Singerly. I know, I know, that’s not even a word. I just don’t want to hear it. Shut up shut up shut up, Adele. Fast forward to the next song before hives break out on my leg.

That said, it’s kind of crazy to hear a simulacrum of Adele’s voice come out of 19 year-old Zheng Hong, a contestant on the Chinese version of “The Voice.”

Things I love about this video?

  1. That big, confident voice coming out of a seemingly quiet, unassuming girl.
  2. The crying judge.
  3. The crying judge.
  4. Alas, again, the crying judge.

ROCK OF ASIAN: Zee Avi

June 24th, 2009 | 0 comments | Posted by Jen

If Lady Day had been raised on a Southeast Asian island and was making pop music in the year 2009, she’d probably sound a lot like Malaysian singer-songwriter Zee Avi.

On her self-titled debut, which came out last month, Zee’s voice is pure jazz, rich and mouthy, set against catchy, acoustic, pop melodies strummed on the guitar and ukulele about love gone awry. The 23 year-old describes her music as “pretty dark,” but it’s also playful and lovely to listen to. So it’s more like if Lady Day had been raised on a Southeast Asian island and was making pop music in the year 2009 AND was taking meds to manage her outsized melancholy. Sad and blue, but sweet and sunny, too, all at once.
