Unlike another comedy that also features the words “four wedding[s]” in its title, there are no awkward, pasty Englishmen stammmering and stumbling about–thank goodness–in Michael Kang‘s third feature film, 4 Wedding Planners.
Instead, we have Lily (Kimberly-Rose Wolter, who also wrote the film) getting pulled into the family wedding planning business, and possibly into the arms of her ex-boyfriend, played by the always game and always SUPER HOT Sung Kang (aka “Jen’s boyfriend” here at DISGRASIAN HQ).
Lily is one of three daughters raised by a single white mother (Illeana Douglas) in Hawaii. Janel Parrish–crazy Mona from ABC Family’s Pretty Little Liars–and Mia Riverton round out the trio of daughters, while Samantha Quan very nearly steals the film as their frazzled client Tina Takitori.
While each daughter has their own romantic conundrums that occasionally spill into their work, it’s the family dynamic between them and with their own mother that provides much of the laughter, and most of the heart, of the film. It’s also gratifying to see Hawaiian folks in a Hawaii-set film instead of just as smiling extras or, even worse, bumbling stereotypes (yes, Rob Schneider in 50 First Dates, I am looking right at you).
If you enjoy heartfelt (but not corny) comedies, support indepedent film and filmmakers, or, even better, you’re sweet on Sung Kang because he is such a biscuit, go see this film. As it’s available through video on demand through many cable providers, as well as YouTube, video on demand, and even on your XBox (see links below), you have no reason not to.
