DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! Who Framed Seemona Sumasar?

The story of 36-year-old single mom Seemona Sumasar (detailed earlier this week by the NYT), pictured above, is a pretty sad one. A self-made Morgan Stanley analyst-turned-restaurateur, Sumasar had her life together when she met Jerry Ramrattan (pictured below), who, according to the Times, “said he was a police detective, but never seemed to go to work. He seemed obsessed with C.S.I., Law & Order and other television police dramas.” They started dating, and he ended up moving in. Over time she became suspicious about the fact that he lied constantly, and for the next year begged him to leave, though he refused.

In March of 2009, Ramrattan reportedly cornered her, taped her mouth, and raped her. After she pressed charges, he sent people to intimidate her. When she wouldn’t drop the charges, Ramrattan–free on bail–framed her.
Like, really framed her. Sumasar, a small woman with no police record, has just been released from jail after 7 months awaiting trial for a string of armed robberies that never actually happened–during which she lost her restaurant and home into foreclosure, and was separated from her 12-year-old daughter. Before one of her ex’s phony “witnesses” spilled the beans to the police, she faced 25 years in prison for her alleged crimes. How is that even possible with our efficient, well-managed, never-had-a-problem justice system, you say? Honestly, the plot is so twisty and turny, that a) it should be a Liam Neeson film and b) you should really read the entire article.
Clearly, Ramrattan is a sociopath. And the obvious winner for this week’s DOTW. But there’s a lesson to be learned from Sumasar’s experience as well, and it isn’t to fear new relationships or do a background check on everyone you meet (although the latter isn’t a TERRIBLE idea for people moving into your home). I think it’s:
NEVER TRUST A CSI FANATIC. NOT EVEN IF THEY SAY THEY’RE JUST A BIG FAN OF GARY SINISE, OR THEY ONLY WATCH CSI: MIAMI (Which I actually think is worse), OR THEY LOVE PHONY FORENSICS, OR THEY WANT TO BE A COP. ANYONE WHO CAN SIT THROUGH THAT MANY WEIRDLY IRRELEVANT INDIE MUSIC MONTAGES AND DERIVATIVE PLOT LINES IS SICK, I TELL YOU, SICK.
