For some reason, I suspect the Dalai Lama was messing with the news guy. In a good-natured way, of course.
@farleyk (not to get all serious but) i donno… i think the joke–using that term very generously, btw–is based on a super simplified assessment of buddhism, as if “one with everything” could encapsulate a subtle-spirital and external-body world view in one line. if one was thinking of the DL’s deep, lifelong, not-of-this-body-nor-this-mind practice in terms of textbook definitions, it would be funnier to them. i guess. but i don’t think there’s any way the DL can relate to that! lame joke!
I hope Keanu’s book is better than his acting…
We’ll see. I’m actually headed to Barnes later today, so I’ll take a peek.
just read this re: keanu reeves’ book, ode to happiness: “…is a collection of inkblot paintings — which purposely look like they’ve been blurred by tears — and accompanying depressing passages, like ‘I draw a hot sorrow bath’ and ‘In my despair room.’ The last line in the book is a black smudge with the words ‘It can always be worse…” and it sells for $55!? sorry keanu, you’re all deep, meaningful and magical and all… but that price cuts too deeply into my ramen & pocky budget…
I doubt this reporter would have tried a similar theme joke with the Pope sitting across from him. The Dalai Lama is known for having a wonderful sense of humor, but this joke essentially mocks his entire life practice. The reporter was an ass to think this would be funny even if the DL “got” the joke.
Hi Diana,
I see your point. It is an unfortunate aspect of typical human nature to reduce other cultures to a few simplistic concepts. In this case it is Buddhism, and we in America are all too familiar with the bigotry currently in vogue with respect to Islam.
