TMZ, which operates under the auspices of AOL News, definitely serves a purpose. In life, there’s always somebody that has to reside in the murkiest layer–the person that denies insurance benefits to cancer patients, the defense attorney that attacks victims in order to save her guilty defendant, the jerk that has to tell little kids that there is no Santa Claus. TMZ is like that person. The supergossip team’s shamelessness allows them to dig deep into the wounds of Hollywood to tell us who’s crazy, who’s dead, who has anal sex with prostitutes instead of their wife, who’s suing their ex, who’s blown all of their money on 8 balls. Without them, we wouldn’t know such things, at least not so quickly and with no tactful filter. It’s questionable whether or not we’d ever want to, but that’s not the point. Bottom line, as I said before: TMZ has a purpose, I guess.
Yesterday, the site posted a segment featuring an on-the-fly “interview” with Sung Kang, one of Jen’s many hot boyfriends and familiar sexyface from the Fast & Furious franchise (You can see him alive again in the upcoming sequel, Fast Five). See below:
According to Kang, the actor was approached by one of TMZ’s camera minions–one that happened to be a friendly Asian dude–and asked a few innocuous questions. Clearly, he didn’t give producers enough dirt to work with (perhaps Kang is one of the few people NOT blowing all of their money on hookers and blow), so they dirtied up the segment all on their own, titling the piece “Ask The Asian Guy” and squealing about a sponsorship by Toyota. The segment’s writers then opted for the cheapest jokes they could rustle up about Georgia native Kang–managing editor Harvey Levin double takes at his name, ordinary answers are translated because the narrator apparently can’t understand what Sung is saying through his “thick Georgian accent,” karaoke is randomly mentioned and horrendous clip of Jackie Chan clowning for Brett Ratner is summoned [Ed. note--Jackie, this is why we hate that shit].
TMZ may serve a purpose–but damn, are they unfunny. So unfunny, in fact, that we almost thought this racist, useless video branded by corporate giants like AOL and Toyota–was an April Fool’s joke.
It wasn’t. The video was real. Or was it? Because if you click on the link now…
…you won’t find any Toyota-sponsored “Ask The Asian Dude” segments anywhere. Hmm.
Did the blogosphere pipe up and make TMZ’s corporate parents mad? Maybe. Looks like this time, the joke’s on them.
