If You Hate ‘Glee,’ Then You Hate Children Too, Apparently

I am not a fan of Glee. You’d think I would be, since I love to sing, I love me a high school drama (past and present faves include Buffy, the oridge 90210, Freaks and Geeks, Friday Night Lights), I was once in an a cappella singing group–I was even in a choir with Jane Lynch for two seconds–and I watch shows like American Idol and The Sing Off without irony, not a lick of it. But a Gleek I’m not. The show lacks any likable female characters–Lynch’s Sue Sylvester is the closest thing, and she’s a monster, albeit a funny one–and the teacher guy creeps me out for some reason, probably owing to the fact that he looks like a Chia pet. And the fact that he couldn’t tell his wife wasn’t really pregnant WHICH IS JUST TOTALLY PREPOSTEROUS. But I’m not going to harp on it further, because it makes people happy for some strange reason, and it’s done some good things for the world, like introducing millennials to music that was popular when forty year-olds were young like them, which probably seems just as preposterous as Glee‘s fake pregnancy.

I guess the Kings of Leon feel the same way I do (as does Slash), because the band refused to give Glee the rights to its songs. And you’d think they’d be flattered, right, because who the fuck are the Kings of Leon again? One day they’re a Skynyrd-type outfit, the next they’re arena rockers with fancy haircuts requiring lots of “product” or something? I couldn’t name a single song of theirs because it all sounds like generic radio to me.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy didn’t take kindly to their rejection nevertheless, and decided to air his grievances in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. In said interview, Murphy climbed up his very tall soapbox to shame the band, not for being too cool for William McKinley High School and its fictional kids but for hating real kids and “the arts” and basically everything good in the world:

“Fuck you, Kings of Leon,” Murphy said. “They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

Ah, the big picture!

Well, in my big picture, there are self-centered assholes who make not-as-great-as-they-think music and wear too much product on their heads, and there are self-centered assholes who make not-as-great-as-they-think TV and have let the hype go to their heads. What they have in common, however, is that they both should go fuck themselves.

(UPDATE: What happens when self-centered assholes take to Twitter.)

The name sounded familiar, so I checked, and yes, Kings of Leon was the band that was ousted from a St Louis concert by pooping pigeons.
Disclaimer: Never seen Glee, or Kings of Leon. People seem to care deeply about both. I don’t.

Okie…well, I can admit that I am a total “Gleek”, whatever that is. Honestly, I am not completely obsessed with the show as I am with the musical numbers, so if that makes me a “Gleek”, then I guess I’ll wear that hat proudly.

But I also don’t fall privy to the whole “it is the best thing in the whole world and everyone should absolutely LOVE it”…I think sometimes the biggest things in pop culture end up being the things that people either love or hate …mainly because that thing is SO BIG in pop culture. Case in point, I really didn’t like “The Social Network” (I know, I know *gasp shock collapse more gasping*). I got into the hype before I saw the film, heard it was going to be this incredible movie and when I actually sat down and watched it, I wasn’t that impressed. Cinematography wise, INCREDIBLE. Acting, ehh…so so.

I digress. What I am trying to say, I guess, is that although I watch Glee, I totally get those who diss it and I totally get those that love it too. Sometimes the actual product doesn’t live up to the hype. But I have to commend the show for bringing back old Broadway classics, making musicals and singing fun again, and in a way, broadening the view of TV networks to be okay with a multi-cultural and multi-racial cast (even if some of the Asian characters tend to be stereotypical).
