One Sad Thing About Midterm Elections 2010 [Ironic Headline Alert]

November 3rd, 2010 | 2 comments | Posted by Diana

If there’s one thing we Californiasians should be bummed about, it’s that Prop 19–the initiative to legalize and regulate marijuana in our state–didn’t pass.

Which means, among many things, that we will not be able to start serving cannabis cookies at family functions in order to force our Hardass Asian aunts into being slightly less awkward, perhaps… almost… warm.

And that California, for all of its Wild West-ness and reputation for progressive mantras, has proven in just two election cycles–by attempting to snuff out gay marriage and recoiling from legal pot–that the state is really just an uptight asshole. It wears a tweed dress jacket from Talbots. It should really smoke some weed.

More importantly, the inability to pass Prop 19 means that we will sadly not be seeing more of Lynn Chen as a stoner:

Ugh. Lame, lame, LAME. LAME!

OH! But you may be happy to know that one good thing came out of last night’s results. As Jen predicted in March, Joseph Cao said buh-bye to his House seat last night. Jen was right (I should have put money down on this)! She, like, totally called it!

Hmmm. Yay?

Okay, still bummed.

Naw the people who voted against 19 weren’t just folks from the anti-drug, weed-is-gonna-kill-our-children circle. There’s been a huge battle WITHIN the pro-marijuana movement over this damn proposition. Basically, we (prop 19 supporters) have had to fight with two big groups who are supposed to be on our side: 1) potheads who think Prop 19 would add more restrictions due to some of the bill’s language and the fact that it opens cannabis to government and corporate control, and 2) farmers and dispensary owners who don’t wanna share a piece of the pie, who are afraid of bu$ine$$ competition. Basically, these stoners think that California has it pretty good and that Prop 19 woulda created more problems than solutions. Sad but true. On the bright side, at 46% of the votes, that’s more support than marijuana legalization has ever had, so we’re moving in the right direction.

Don’t hate, integrate.

I was trying to give Andrew bunny ears, but I ended up throwing an Asian peace sign instead. Yo, I think that's racist.
