Disgraced Ex-Dean Cecilia Chang: Slave Lord Or Just Another Hardass Asian Mama?

My mother is a wonderful lady, but I’m convinced that she gave birth to four children in an attempt to build an army of personal slaves. If she wasn’t such a Hardass Asian Workhorse in other arenas (like her career), I might actually think she was the laziest person in the world. I record her outgoing answer machine messages, check her unheard cell phone voicemails, and install all of her bullshit, pull-your-hair-out, why-the-eff-is-this-so-complicated PC anti-virus programs. My sister chauffeurs her to the Indian casino, takes her dog to get groomed, and books all of my parents’ plane tickets. Mom orchestrates big family projects: “We’re going to rearrange all of the furniture in this room!”–and then sits down on a chair to yell out directions.
For real. Mom once wanted to buy a new car–one of those fantastic, big, black, luxury sedan mom boats. We brought her to the dealership. She said, “I’ll just stay in this car, you and Daddy go in and pick one for me.” We said, “It’s your CAR. Don’t you even want to test drive it?” She said, “Just get the black one. Make sure it has all the nice stuff in it.”
Six car dealership hours later, it was done. While waiting, my mom got hungry and asked us to buy her some lunch.
Cecilia Chang, former Dean of St. John's University
You may have heard about Cecilia Chang, the disgraced former Dean of St. John’s University, who was suspended and then fired earlier this year after being accused of embezzling $1 million from the school. Chang could now face additional prison time for allegedly forcing students with federal scholarships to do demeaning labor for her personal benefit, family and home. As one who controlled the doling out of scholarships, it is said that Chang threatened to cut off those students who defied her, and used her leverage to use and abuse those who didn’t.
A few highlights of some of the charges against Chang from the NY Post:
“Cecilia Chang, 57, ruled the Institute of Asian Studies at the Queens school with a dictator-like authority over her helpless students, making them cook her dinner, clean her home, wire money for her to use at Foxwoods Casino, and chauffeur her son to the airport at 3 a.m., according to a federal criminal complaint.”
“‘I felt so bad when she yelled at me, especially when she didn’t like my cleaning,” said one of the students, who was afraid she would lose her scholarship if quoted by name.”
“The students also performed work at her office and her Jamaica Estates property. They shoveled snow, took out garbage, did laundry and prepared dinner for her, her son and her son’s girlfriend.”
“But the free labor didn’t make the Chang family grateful, since her son often called one student “stupid” and yelled and cursed at her if he wasn’t satisfied with her cooking, court papers charged.”
Chang’s lawyer has stated that the students’ duties, which never exceeded 20 hours per week per student, were a “normal part of the St. John’s work-study program.” Uhhhh, I don’t know about that. But is she really a slave lord? All of her dick moves actually seem like basic Hardass Asian Mom-isms. Maybe she just thought of all of the St. John’s students as children of her very own.

weirdly, i’m not that shocked as her actions sound like something my own mom would do. thanks for writing these posts. it’s nice to know that there are people who have experienced the same craziness from their own hard-ass asian parents as i have.
Hahaha! I didn’t know she had a son – I thought maybe she had been incapable of having children of her own and thought she’d “borrow” some to do her Hard Ass Asian Parent bidding on!
She bought lingerie using school funds? Ummm…I wonder what part of donation solicitation and potential contributor luring that was a part of. I kind of have a dirty mind, but “Ms. Chang’s lawyer, Todd Greenburg, in denying the charges against his client, said, “Every dime this woman spent was spent on behalf of St. John’s University, entertaining the people St. John’s University told her to entertain.”
That is even a bit rich for me. What a shady lady!
