What I Learned From A Weekend Of Watching World Cup Soccer
Like I mentioned last week, I don’t know a lot about soccer–but I dig the aggro gentleman’s sport (and the gentlemen that play it) and I truly respect that it’s The World’s Game. So this weekend, when I wasn’t reading the July 2010 issue of Martha Stewart Living (it has such cute pies on the cover!), or happily booing Ron Artest at the free throw line, I was watching solid hours of sweet-ass international soccer.
Here’s what a learned:
a) Sucks to be Robert Green.

WHOOPSIE.
b) No, seriously. It sucks.
c) Japan fans rule.
d) Germany does not fuck around!
“>
e) And though it seems like it should be kind of a win-win situation, nobody’s really all that happy with a tie game.
f) The incessant/loud drone of those vuvuzelas in the crowd is effing annoying for a reason.
g) Composing a “detailed” photo report about “what I learned” from a lazy weekend spent on the couch (perhaps only to justify days spent accomplishing nothing that could have been more productively spent weeding the garden or practicing my Vietnamese or working or running errands for my parents) is so weirdly and backwards-ly Asian I don’t quite know what to do with myself.

I hear Bill Buckner and Robert Green had drinks together.

Did you hear about how they didn’t air the North Korean vs. Brazil game in North Korea because they didn’t win. They played really well against the tournaments favourites, losing 2-1. That is respectable!! The players were so proud to be there, they were actually crying.
Robert Green’s miss is going to be the fluff of the tournament and the English press are unforgiving when it comes to footie.
Alas, South Korea got absolutely owned by the Argentineans yesterday 4-1, but they did beat Greece 2-0 on Saturday.
Believe me when I say this the vuvuzelas are a lot more annoying at the games than they are on tv. But they do give the matches a certain vibe that I have never experienced in any other football match. On principle I will not blow one! And that’s AYOBA!!
