DISGRASIAN OF THE WEAK! Suspected Times Square Bomber Faisal Shahzad

May 7th, 2010 | 9 comments | Posted by Jen

Suspected Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad is giving people a bad name.

And, no, we don’t mean terrorists. (They do a fantastic job of that on their own, obvs.)

We mean immigrants. And naturalized citizens. And Pakistani Americans, who, in the wake of several recent terror plots involving other Pakistani Americans, are living in fear of the backlash. People whose lives may resemble Shahzad’s in one way or another with the exception of one key point–they aren’t terrorists.

But they’re certainly more likely now to be suspected as such. Which is just what everyone needs in our current climate of immigrant-hate, rah-rah-racial profiling, and politicians preying on people’s fear of The Other, as in this ad from Republican Dan Fanelli, who’s running for Congress in Florida:

(For any of you geniuses who actually think racial profiling works–we seem to be attracting a bunch of dummies lately, god knows why–read this. And this. And then, please, stop reading this blog.)

So thanks, Faisal Shahzad. Thanks for fanning the flames of not only religious extremism but political opportunism as well. That takes talent. Good thing you have more talent for that than for making bombs! You’re on a no-fly list now? We can think of another list to put you on that would be just as appropriate.

(Hint: rhymes with “Kick Dancer.”)

My father, being Pakistani, was asked if he knew this man.

We live in Tennessee (ha, unfortunately).

I’m really glad you made this post, though, Jen. :)

    @asian goddess

Well duh, obviously that means that since they are both Pakistani, they grew up and rode bikes together! :p

Re: “Nice Guy” running for Congress

Guess that means I have to go back to register to vote. What a retard. Now all the terrorists will dress like old balding men. Or start recruiting them.

  8. prometheus says:

    Actually, to clarify:

If anything, a deeper and more privacy-invasive form of screening for -everyone- would be the only truly more effective mechanism.

Other than that, he’s just encouraging racism and blowing smoke in the air.

  9. Simon says:

The irony is that he didn’t stand out as a red flag until the pieces of the puzzle started coming together. With his neatly trimmed beard, sunglasses and bluetooth headset in that photo, he doesn’t look like the stereotyped terrorist we’re accustomed to seeing.

Everyone is capable of the best and the worst of humanity.
