Finger Lickin’ Awkward

January 6th, 2010 | 12 comments | Posted by Diana

KFC created the ad below for its Australia market. The spot features a white dude getting himself out of an “awkward situation” at a cricket match by offering the black folks around him his bucket of fried chicken.

TMZ included a KFC rep’s remarks to a local paper when posting the video today, which were:

“It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team … The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC’s permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism.”

Kentucky Fried Chicken–a company born in the dirty South of the United States and currently housed in the Kentucky-based corporation Yum! Brands, Inc.–needs to be told that a culturally-based stereotype exists? Are you fucking kidding me?

See, y’all, this is why I eat Korean fried chicken once a week. Sometimes twice.

“Awkward situation”? Why? Because he’s the only white dude? Sheesh!

It really doesn’t matter what country it is. KFC ads are getting to be offensive. I refuse to try their grilled chicken because of those Asian stereotypes in the commercial last year. Oh, who am I kidding? I wouldn’t try it anyway. KFC sucks!

  2. RL says:

Diana, Kyochon’s fried chicken ad doesn’t seem all that much better…

  3. Diana says:

DUDE! What is it about KFCs?!?!?!? Do drumsticks bring out the worst in ad people?

  4. mlbologna says:

@RL UBERLOLZ! That is sooooo terrible. I mean, I guess it’s possible that the people making these ads are unaware of the stereotype. Different culture. But who knows…

  5. Simon says:

No matter how you look at that commercial, it is still bad. The idea *might* seem humorous, but only if you’re racist.

  6. xandersaide says:

RL, do not even fuck with kyochon. double fried chicken? crazy….crazy good.

  7. Peachy says:

To be honest I don’t see this as even slightly racist. KFC is an American company but this commercial was created by their Australian branch. It’s an Australian commercial made BY Australians FOR Australians (who have no knowledge of the chicken stereotype here in America). If this had been made by American then I would be completely outraged, but it wasn’t. And I hate to say this but aren’t you stereotyping black people by finding this offensive? All black people =/= African Americans. It’s as bad as saying all Asians look the same…

Oh and to put the commercial in context, KFC is one of the West Indian cricket team sponsors and KFC has a whole slew of commercials featuring one person getting in an awkward situation and using chicken to dispel it. This isn’t just one random white dude giving a bunch of black people chicken.

  8. Simon says:

@Peachy: How about white Australians parodying as “The Jackson Jive” while wearing blackface and making a buffoonery of themselves?

Harry Connick Jr., an American singer and actor who was a guest-judge on the Australian TV show, called out the outright racism and stood up to the act.

  9. Peachy says:

@Simon: that was obvious ignorance (and racism), this is not.

  10. Tristan says:

The British commonwealth has long pleaded ignorance in regards to racial insensitivities. I’m not buying it anymore.

  11. Peachy says:

@Tristan: Like I said to Simon there is big difference between blatant racism (like that bag) and cultural differences (the commercial).

The world does not revolve around the USA. Just because something is offensive here it does not mean that it will be viewed in the same way in other parts of the world.

  12. Tristan says:

And that’s exactly my point. The handbag, to most non-U.S. consumers, isn’t in the least offensive. A majority of people don’t know what the word ‘squaw’ even means. It cuts both ways.

This isn’t a matter of cultural relativity. It’s a matter of convenience for ad men. The same thing happens here in the good ol’ U.S. of A.
