AMAZIAN OF THE WEEK! LPGA Tour Champion Michelle Wie

November 16th, 2009 | 5 comments | Posted by Jen

Name: Michelle Wie58925190

Age: 20

Occupation: Student and pro golfer

After becoming the youngest player to qualify for an LPGA tour event at age 12 and turning pro at 16, only to have her career declared “over” by age 18, Michelle Wie’s finally won her first LPGA tour title. Wieeeeeeeeeee!

We’ve been tough on Michelle Wie in the past, particularly when she became better known for her bratty tournament shenanigans than her game, but her win this weekend at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational suggests that the former child prodigy who always wanted to compete with men may have grown up and sacked up over the last few years. Certainly what Wie had to say after her win can be taken as a good sign:

“I think that hopefully life will be a lot better (after this), but I still have a lot of work to do.”

“I still have a lot of work to do”…that’s music to our Hardass Asian Ears!

Congratulations to Michelle Wie. I wish I was that trophy :3

But if you start playing golf when you’re young, what do you play when you’re old and golf loses its appeal? :( Maybe she could hustle the young’uns in mini-golf! $1 a hole, plus loser fishes balls out of the water hazard.

  2. xyien says:

She was sensational in the Solheim Cup a few months ago when Wie’s American team beat the Europeans. She looked like she was enjoying the game again. Maybe because she was playing for the country and not for herself, or maybe because her professor father wasn’t around. Her father has been shadowing her since she was a 12-year-old prodigy. It’s time for her parents to let go and let professional management and coaches take over her career. She performs better when she is on her own. Tennis prodigy Jennifer Capriati had the same problem with her overprotective father.

  3. Cindy says:

The relief is short-lived for Wie. Now that she’s finally won, the talk about her being the celebrity face for the LPGA has begun…again.

  4. Punch Rockgroin says:

Has anyone visited Michelle’s blog? Refreshingly, it’s about her art and fashion projects. Check out what she did to here Nikes.

I’ve seen her on campus and yes, she looks pretty big IRL. She also falls asleep during lecture like any other student. She has this air about her but I think it’s b/c she’s just quiet and generally keeps to herself.
