Occupation: High school senior
Known for: By now, many of you already know Lori’s story. A little over a month ago, the Storm Lake High School (Storm Lake, IA) senior refused to take an English-language proficiency exam. Although the Laotian-American teen has a 3.9 GPA, ranks seventh in her class, and is a member of the National Honor Society, school officials mandated that she take the English Language Development Assessment test, because she had indicated in school records that she didn’t speak English at home. Lori was born and raised in the States and had never taken ESL before, but her parents speak Lao at home, and she’d made note of that fact in her records because she is rightfully proud of her heritage (and because it was the truth, as it probably was in many of your own households). She also publicly stated that the test was “demeaning” and “racist.” But school officials saw things differently, and first suspended her, then revoked her National Honor Society membership, and then told her she was “no Rosa Parks” and that she should give up the fight. She didn’t, and last week, she finally won.
And now Storm Lake school district…how about an apology?
