Yes, Deerhoof
Despite the 100-degree weather and what felt like 200% humidity, swarms of brotherly-loving music fans showed up from all corners for The Roots’ Family Picnic in Philly last Saturday. DJ Jazzy Jeff spun a set that would make ya cry (if the sensation of your skin boiling off of your body didn’t already accomplish that), sexy J Davey got funky, The Cool Kids beat the heat, Sharon Jones filled the steamy air with soul, Gnarls Barkley tore down the house, et cetera et cetera et cetera. The Roots know how to throw a party, I’ll can assure you of that.
The biggest surprise of the day for me was Deerhoof (A ?uestlove fave, from what I hear) , with their tiny-squealy singer, many skinny legs and indie-slumped shoulders, who brought the prog and came to play. As I looked out onto the beautifully-colored sea of urban dwellers whose love of good vibes and fat beats brought them out in front of the river on the hottest day of the year, I wondered how the quiet band of left-of-centers would be received.
They brought down the house. Philly is truly the city of love.
