I didn’t know much about Shu Uemura before he died. In fact, before I read his obituary, I didn’t even know that Shu was a man. But without him and his genius makeup line, I wouldn’t be able to put on my face in the morning. Without the color palette that he designed for the skin tones of Asian women, I would probably still be walking around looking like a sad, sallow Malibu Barbie who’d just lost her Dream House in a fire. Thank you, Shu, for giving us Asian girls green eyeshadow and peach blush that worked with our skin color and didn’t make it look like our faces were about to vomit. The world is, no doubt, an uglier place without you.
