The International Herald Tribune reports that 100 Japanese lawmakers, all members of Prime Minister Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party, announced Tuesday that the Nanjing Massacre of 1937 (aka “The Rape of Nanking”) was fabricated. The Herald Tribune writes, “Historians generally agree that the Japanese Army slaughtered at least 150,000 civilians and raped tens of thousands of women” in the southern Chinese city, although the Japanese government claims to have killed only 20,000 people.
Toru Toida, another member of the group, demanded that photographs portraying the Japanese military in a negative light be removed from Chinese war memorials. “We are absolutely positive that there was no massacre in Nanking,” Toida said.
These are photos taken during the Rape of Nanking, where my Mom’s family is from and had to escape so as not to meet the same fate:
Fabricated? No. Sickening? Yes.
