Ever since reading Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, I’ve developed a prejudice against mountain climbing and climbers. I find the goal of summiting Everest particularly loathsome and hubristic. It’s no longer only about climbing the world’s tallest mountain, but also being the oldest or youngest or fastest or blindest or the person with the fewest limbs to ever do so.
That said, this “alternative” makes me sad: “China to build highway on world’s tallest mountain”
China’s building the highway in Tibet, which I thought they couldn’t skey-rew over any further. Wrong! And the government is spending $20 mil to build this road (in only four months–sounds like a deathtrap) for…the FREAKIN’ OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY.
Talk about hubris.
