I’ve probably read every one of Joan Didion’s prose theories about Los Angeles on the verge of chaos, yet it was with shock and sadness that I watched LA’s Griffith Park ablaze in a colossal brush fire last night:
For those who don’t know, the LA Zoo just kisses the other side of this fiery hill, and my worries immediately went to to the 1200+ animals (which include dwindling species of Asian elephants) living there.
Fortunately, the Zoo is equipped with emergency plans, and I’ve been informed that all the animals–big and small–are safely indoors away from smoke and fire and currently free from harm. As it turns out, they’re always ready for earthquakes, fires, crazy zoo terrorists, etc.
CONGRATULASIANS and ADULASIANS to the Zoo for being so prepared! Perhaps you’ve read plenty of Didion, too.
Big warm thoughts to the Zoo staff and animals as the fire gets under control.
